CMT airs The Terminator

I was flipping through the program guide 2 nights ago and came across The Terminator. I looked over to see what channel it was and....CMT! Talk about losing a format.

Country Music Television has presented other movies out of format such as "Groundhog Day".

You guys are too wrapped up in format. That approach to broadcasting is so 20th century. Today, you program to demo, not format. The country music audience likes things besides country music. Music is just one aspect of the demo. That's why country radio stations can accept Darius Rucker, Jon Bon Jovi, and Taylor Swift. Oh that's right...Taylor's country!

How does Arnold appeal to hicks? CMT no longer plays country music, like MTV no longer plays music. Expect hick reality shows on CMT like "Gulf Shore".

If Country Music Television were to have a southern version of "Jersey Shore" called "Gulf Shore", it would probably take place in Gulf Shores, Alabama (southeast of Mobile) or other communities along the Gulf of Mexico.

They do "hick reality shows" already. And they also play lots of country music. They do live concerts with top stars like Carrie Underwood and more. However, they have learned (as MTV learned) that music videos aren't the attraction they once were. Like music on the radio, viewers just want to see their favorite stars, and they want them on demand. So all those videos are online. CMT is a brand. So you don't do one thing 24/7. You build a destination that covers all the interests of your demographic.

There's another country channel called GAC that shows more videos, and does more music-related stuff, and even they are discovering they get more viewers from non-music material than strictly music shows. It's about adapting to your audience, and these cable channels are doing that. Maybe radio could learn something.

Country music fans are less likely to have broadband, they are more likely to use older or possibly obsolete technology

You'd be surprised. CMT, like MTV, is really aiming at a younger demo than the country radio audience. More 18-34 than 25-45. Those younger folks are just as tech savvy as people who like other genres. The fact is that reality shows and movies get bigger numbers than videos. It's too bad, but that's how it is.

It seems that CMT is slowly backing off from playing country anything, as its latest movies and schedule attests -- as I mentioned before, part of CMT's schedule is "Kitchen Nightmares", starring Chef Ramsay, which, as far as I know, featured zero country-friendly eateries in its run.

They may not go to Shoney's but they've been going to more conventional places lately. And country people have to eat.

If you look at CMT's show offerings, that are far more shows like Sweet Home Alabama and Texas Girls than Kitchen Nightmares. That is the exception rather than the rule.

And keep in mind that its not in Viacom's best interest to have CMT encroach on VH1 or MTV or even Spike. They are balancing the audiences and demos for all their channels. I imagine they got the rights, and just decided this show fits better with the CMT demo than with BET.

But broadband isn't widely available in rural areas

CMT shows country music videos 4AM-Noon.

... because it's cheaper to run videos in that early window.

Dime a dozen movies that appeal to the demo you're looking to attract? These networks could do away with them, quite frankly. Anyone ever hear of Netflix?
