CMT's Leslie Fram Out

The ongoing Paramount cuts have reached CMT where VP of music strategy Leslie Fram is out:

The reality is there's a lot less music at CMT or any of the video channels these days. They're mainly off-net reruns and movies.

True but it’s been nearly two decades since the bulk of viewers tuned to MTV, CMT and VH1 for music.

Sorry to see her go but at the same time Paramount itself is putting more attention on protecting the Paramount + app. Woah this is like the positions MTV and VH1 had to deal with when their job revolves around their networks award shows and specials. From the article.

Fram is a longtime major player in the country-music community who oversaw the channel’s music programming overs on all verticals as well as the CMT Music Awards and franchises like CMT Storytellers, Giants and Crossroads, among other responsibilities. Yet her stature in Nashville reaches far beyond the channel, as is evident in her farewell letter:

It's not like country music is starving for television exposure these days. Seems that every week, two or more country artists appear on network morning or late night shows. This is far from the days when CMT and The Nashville Network were the only significant outlets Nashville had to expose its performers to viewers nationwide. CMT still has a Top 20 countdown and other country video programming on weekends. I'd be surprised to see CMT ditch music entirely, as TNN did when it rebranded to The National Network and then Spike. But even if it does, that's not going to hurt the genre any more than losing Circle did. Between network TV and the vast online media universe, fans will still be exposed to a tremendous amount of music and information about the musicians.

Which is why the cable music channels have ceased to be music channels. For me, YouTube killed the need for them.

Paramount has a decision to make about all of their channels: CMT, MTV, VH-1, and BET. They're all iconic brands that virtually no one watches. The value of the brands are also diminishing with every passing year. Currently the best known use of CMT is its annual CMT Music Awards that now air on CBS. But even that isn't what it once was.

True too but also consider the other factor. It’s not just YouTube that killed CMT, MTV and VH1 it’s also Iheart. There’s more attention to Ihearts concerts and Award shows too and attract audiences to their app. They get the target demographic too in the same way YouTube does.

It will be interesting to see how Paramount decides on the fate of MTV, VH1, CMT. We seen MTV News get shut down in the past year for all the same reasons Paramount has to protect Paramount + app.
