I believe Comcast and Cablevision made a deal many years ago to carry each other's networks. Comcast would carry News 12 if Cablevision agreed to carry CN8. It's a way for each company's network to gain broader exposure.
It seems like Comcast got the better deal. News12 isn't carried on any of Comcast's systems south of Mercer County, while CN8 is on all of Cablevision's systems in NJ. News12 isn't very relative to people in South Jersey; CN8 is even less relevant to people in Northern NJ. The local Philly stations cover Camden, Gloucester and Burlington counties. However, there is a lot of PA news and traffic, which has just about the same relevance as Central and Northern NJ for us, but the latter isn't provided in any form on cable.
News12's traffic coverage and newsstories maybe handy if someone is intending to travel an hour or more North into Somerset or Middlesex Co. and elsewhere north. I think News12 now has 2 additional off shoot channels as well, with one for traffic. NJ 101.5 FM currently does the job exclusively, as far as providing state wide news/traffic info.
From an advertising perspective, I'd think Cablevision/News12 should want more eyeballs, even ones in Southern NJ, though SNJ isn't anyways a top of the list requirement. They'd rather want more viewership in its home area. Verizon FIOS is a direct competitor to Comcast and Cablevision, so they won't carry either. However, it would be nice if FIOS in South Jersey could offer it, as something Comcast doesn't carry. I know Verizon FIOS carries WLVT 39, MSG and FSNY for Knicks and Nets games, WGN Superstation and some other stations Comcast isn't carrying in Southern NJ.
