CNN Abandons Ticker - New CNN Graphics and HLN logo

Pigs were saw flying over downtown Atlanta today.

CNN is the first cable news network to abandon the crawling ticker that displays headlines at the bottom of the screen. This appears to be part of a graphics overhaul that makes the graphics look similar (albeit with a better font) to CNN International.

Meanwhile...Headline News has a new logo (an HLN in a box, with the words "Headline News" to the left). I guess this ends speculation of a name change. They still have a ticker - much like CNN Internationals where it is headlines from the website - no crawling.

The 'flipper', as it is being called, is a great change, in my opinion. I agree with MJ that the ticker, for many people, was a reminder of 9/11 and just added to the 'heightened' effect of the news channels since that time. I think a lot of people are getting worn out with that. The flipper makes sense because it gives viewers a more simplified rundown of the headlines. It seems to be a happy compromise between ticker or no ticker. CNN is a good example of how less can be more in the graphics department (take some notes, Fox)

(take some notes, Fox)
I think MSNBC has the loudest graphics in the business, not Fox News

However, I'm glad to see the ticker die. It is difficult to follow the ticker and listen to the newscast at the same time. Sometimes you'd just catch the end of something on the ticker and you'd never see it again, etc.

One thing I do not like: Flashing graphics by the CNN logo, indicating which show is on or what topic is being discussed. During tonight's Larry King Live, his show's title card kept going through its intro sequence, alternating with a picture of Jim Carrey. Waaaaay distracting.

I totally agree the animated logo was a bit confusing. I couldn't figure out if that was intentional or not.

Some parts of the new style I like, but one I don't yet is where the times are under the CNN logo, they alternate them with the stock indexes--at least the stock index portions should have a slightly bigger font...the times are easier to read than the stock indexes. Otherwise, interesting-looking redo....

When I saw "American Morning" yesterday, I thought that based on the new graphics, the name of the program had changed to "The Most News In The Morning" (its slogan)!

As such, to echo the above poster, the rotating local times and temperatures of major cities has been removed from "AM" as well.

For those away from a television who wishes to have a look at CNN's new graphics package:

Oh my gosh...somebody threw their shoes at the President?!

I have been taking a "news fast" for the last month to recharge after the election, and I had no idea this happened. Holy cow.

Headline News seems to have lost its direction. Now that Glenn Beck is gone, with Lou Dobbs repeats in its place, and the entertainment show, and Nancy Grace, etc.,etc., it seems to be a mishmash of everything. Maybe they have a grand plan, but it is not evident right now. Even their regular newscasts seem lightweight and fluffy. Just an opinion.

Can anyone actually explain the point behind Headline News? It outgrew its purpose long ago.

Thats true. Who needs that channel when local channels on their sub HD have news and weather channel all in one. And when breaking news happens CNN is going to show it.

As for the new CNN graphics I dislike the flash graphic on the left of the CNN logo as many people have already said. I think they could do away with the box around the CNN logo and drop the name of the show under CNN. And I like the new ESPN style ticker as it just tells viewers about the story they are talking about. But I still like MSNBC's graphics

I know it's off topic a bit, but one thing that drives me crazy is when FOX, say at the beggining of Hannity and Combs starts out with a huge graphic that says BREAKING NEWS, while it may be about a topic that is already 12 hours old.

Also, Hannity and FOX will push that they have an "EXCLUSIVE" interview coming up with a specific guest, when that guest has already been interviewed numerous times in several different formats like cable or network news or even talk radio.

ESPNews used to beat "breaking news" to death, displaying hours-old information in the bullet on the screen. At times, it seemed as if they reached to present a score as "breaking news". Now that's reaching.

The new-look ESPNews display isn't so in your face about "breaking news," which is good.

CNN abuses "breaking news" too. The Blagojevich scandal has had a "breaking news" bug on-screen for days, even when there's nothing new to report, and they're just repeating old information or talking to their pundits for their analysis. I guess it will be "breaking" until the creep resigns.

Speaking of Breaking News...the Breaking News graphic is now yellow instead of red (just like CNN International). Given how red is associated more with breaking news...it seems weird.

On Larry King Live last night, I noticed almost constant animation of the graphics. Extremely distracting.

...how could you tell? Aren't Larry King's crazy tangents distracting enough as they are? :)

True. Perhaps I confused the graphics animation with movement of his suspenders.
