CNN Drops To Fourth (Last) Place Among Cable Networks

Larry King is so old, he belongs on CBS. Anderson Cooper's 15 minutes of fame should have ended years ago - I didn't think it was possible to be more boring than Aaron Brown. Campbell Brown suffers from Katie Couric Syndrome: Pleasant but a total lightweight. Lou Dobbs is supposedly talking with Fox, where he belongs.

CNN started going down the dumper when Bernard Shaw retired. But that being said, their news (when they actually cover news) still much better than what passes for news on Faux Noise or BSNBC.

Well, if their anchors' performances on "Celebrity Jeopardy" are any guide, people may have doubts about getting their news from D students. Wolf Blitzer, in particular, was impressive coming in last with $-4600. Soledad O'Brien came in last too. These guys should do cameos the next time Will Ferrell plays Alex Trebek on SNL! They'd even lose to the fake Sean Connery! LOL!!

Here are the sad details: http://www.nypost.com/p/pagesix/anchors_sink_on_jeopardy_otdWknnBnpH2jCseGGrJLL

Love the defense from the "CNN insider": "They are reporters, not trivia experts. And the buzzer is complicated." ::) ;D

Amusing? Yes. Telling? Perhaps.

I noticed that because Jon Stewart and Michael Savage goes after the Cable News People for being idiots and puppets. and HLN is just tabloid news I never watch it.

The cable news stalwart finds itself trailing its own sister network, HLN, among the four cable news networks. And outside of Larry King, CNN regularly finishes last in primetime every night.

And, seriously, how long is Larry King going to continue? I can't imagine he enjoys the grueling 5 night a week schedule, but who knows.
Come to think of it, a lof his episodes seem to be taped in advance in recent months.

Campbell Brown, as was stated earlier, comes across as pleasant, but yeah, kind of light-weight. I like Anderson Cooper and John Roberts, but they don't seem to be breaking through with viewers.

It seems like they have been "tinkering" with CNN most of this decade. What next? More tinkering? When will it all end?

Funny you shouldn't mention Anderson Cooper... "AC 360" has recorded its lowest month in viewership (this one) despite a small spike in the summer, thanks to the tragic death of Michael Jackson.

As far as Roberts and Kiran Chetry on "American Morning" - a.k.a. "the most news in the morning" - they do a commendable job, and while most may think the show might be milquetoast, it does beat "Morning Joe" on MSNBC on some days!

Wow I thought Cable news anchors were smarter than us but then again we need Bernard Shaw to save the network.

To me, comparing CNN to the others is like comparing apples and oranges. CNN is news, and Faux and MSNBC are entertainment. Also, CNN still gets more people tuning in, with more cume from more viewers in than either Fox or MSNBC. The problem is the typical CNN viewer will watch for 10 minutes and then go elsewhere. With its rotation of news stories and without talk show anchors, CNN does not get the long period viewing credits to add to its ratings. They do have better demos than Fox, though.
Until CNN figures out how to get their viewers to watch for longer periods they'll continue to lose. Personally, I would try to make the presentation a lot less boring and cut Campbell Brown loose. Maybe bring back its hard news image by adding Bernard and/or Dan Rather??

I think some of CNN's current air talent (Wolf, John King) hold their own when it comes to being a Dan Rather-type figure.

Here's a culture shock: What do you think of CNN hiring - should he somehow part ways with MTV - Kurt Loder?

I've heard that in the TV news biz CNN does not have a great reputation as a place you necessarily want to work for. Supposedly they are cheap, management gives conflicting goofy direction, and there are various types of personal insults for those who don't follow the company orthodoxy (Stuart Varney's Ash Wednesday run-in comes to mind). A lot of their talent seems to move on to relatively small local markets, which I don't think would be happening if it was a decent place to work.

I agree that this is a complete apples and oranges comparision. CNN is actually focused on news, investigation and reporting. Fox and MSNBC are the television equivalents of talk radio. They're entertainment channels who use the news to mold into their political agendas.

Now they've both flourished (or at least increased their ratings) by taking a political stance. CNN can play dirty and possibly increase ratings, too, but they seem determined to try to make a go of the reporting of real news. Sadly, Americans seem least interested in real news, in this day and age, which is incredible seeing that we are living in historic times.

No surprise. It's hard to stay on top when you're insulting half your potential audience.
