CNN hit by tornado

CNN's headquarters in Atlanta was hit by a tornado, causing substanial damage to the bulding. The Omni Hotel and Georgia Dome (where the SEC tournament was in progress) had damage as well.

CNN has video of water pouring into the atrium of the CNN Center and damage to their video archives. Only a few injuries were reported. Local TV in Atlanta is showing debris all over the area.

Yeah I just caught it on the news, what a mess, Only a few injuries were reported,I hope CNN has those video archives backed up somewhere else,28 years of video just got wasted.

CNN, and its website, are all over this news.

Of course, when it hits close to home...

The storm struck the 71,000-seat Georgia Dome at 9:45 p.m. during a Southeastern Conference tournament basketball game. It shattered windows and tore roofs from buildings -- including CNN Center -- before continuing into several residential neighborhoods.

I was watching their coverage late Friday Night(3-14) and CNN was on top of
it, even though they were part of this story, but my question is, where was
MSNBC and the Fox News Channel?, I turned by there and both were into regular
programming when they should have covered this instead of airing a replay of
"Countdown" with Keith Olbermann and a replay of "Hannity & Colmes",
I think politics are more important than weather when it should not be.

The important thing is;Did Robin Meade's new rack survive the storm?

If the tapes are in plastic cases like commercial tapes should be, then they should be fine I would think. It's magnetic fields that are the problem for those things.

If they had film down there, it would probably of been destoryed or badly damaged . That's what happened to WBRE-TV 28 (Wilkes-Barre, PA.) They had their old film stock (from the 1950s) in their basement, their basement flooded, and destoryed most of their film archives.

I know they probably didn't receive much or any damage, but I haven't heard the Weather Channel mention if anything happened to them since they're in Atlanta as well. I'd take it that the other Turner networks that aren't in the CNN Tower (TBS, TNT, TCM, etc.) made it OK.

Correct...Turner Networks are not located in the CNN tower, they are located at "Techwood" which is about 1 mile north of CNN Center. Turner Networks were not harmed in anyway during the storms. Techwood also houses a backup Broadcast Control Center for CNN in the event something major happened at CNN Center. Same goes for CNN, they also house a back Broadcast Control Center for the Turner Networks in the event that something happened at Techwood. As far as I know, CNN Center did not have to utulize the backup Broadcast Control Center on Friday.

The Weather Channel...from my understanding, they didn't have any damage, they are about 5 or so miles north of Techwood.

I have a friend who lives in Atlanta, and we talked Saturday night. She was basically telling that everything was chaotic there. She and one of her friends were driving back home from a night on the town, and they were on the road when the tornado hit. They drove to an area where they hid under a bridge until things died down. She's in good spirits and everything is ok with her.
