CNN to debut comedy show

On Oct. 25, CNN is breaking away from its traditional 24-hour news coverage to debut a new comedy show hosted by D.L. Hughley. It's called "D.L. Hughley Breaks the News."

Here's the story:

I think it's a pretty bold move but not totally out of the question. I recall that they were in talks with Jay Leno at one point (or still are?) to have him host a similar kind of show after he's done at NBC. But I'm looking forward to this. I remember watching D.L. audition for the "Late Late Show" gig on CBS before Craig Ferguson was hired and he was a pretty entertaining guy.

I'll give it a look, but this pretty much confirms the role of today's cable news channel: Entertainment.

I kinda wish they would try this not on the main CNN, but on Headline News, where they've already established some not-so-straight laced TV fare.

CNN to debut comedy show.

Gee I thought they already did that on CNN with some of the so-called news anchors the network has hired.

Lately, I've seen comedians like Hughley and Chris Rock on the panel on "Larry King Live", I guess in an attempt to attract younger demos. If what is being reported is true, that the new kid on the block Rachel Maddow is beating Larry in some demos, the plan could work twofold based on the success of Hughley's show.

I've also seen Stephanie Miller a bunch of times on "Larry King" panels. Maybe as a launching pad for her own CNN show? After all, she was one half of "Equal Time" with Pat Buchanan's kid sister ten years ago...

FOX News tried the comedy with the half hour news hour and it flopped.
That's because they were going up against SNL on NBC and Mad TV on the main FOX network.

CNN International shows the Daily Show with John Stewart

CNN is now in opinion territory with Lou Dobbs, Roland Martin and Bill Bennett. This is the next logical step in any network going off the rails (MTV, The Weather Channel, TV Land, etc).

Really all the cable news channels are (and have been for quite some time) a bunch of "talking heads propaganda channels" in my opinion.

As for MTV, they shouldn't have the VMAs anymore if they decide to stick with their current "no music videos at all" programming. The Weather Channel is still mostly the same, just with a new HD set, for now.

I hope it's at least slightly better than his last attempt, "Weekends at the D.L" on Comedy Central.

Positively unwatchable.

That was before his stint on "Studio 60" so here's to hoping he's refined his approach.

Is it true that the show is cancelled after this weekend?

While sifting through last night's episode, I saw a segment featuring clips of the previous episodes, ending with a graphic that read:

"D.L. Hughley Breaks The News
October 2008 - December 2008"

Also, at the end, D.L. didn't say "see you next week" but rather "have a happy holiday."

It could be curtains for D.L. after all. The show re-airs tonight. Set your DVR's.

If the graphic read like that...they are gone. I knew this would fail.

But at least he did get to say goodbye.

I see it more as an "initial order of episodes" with a possibility for more if the experiment worked. But, a failure is a failure.

It seems the Obama campaign brought out a couple of these shows. Is "Chocolate News" still on the air?

Chocolate News is still on, and I catch it whenever I can. I think it's a funny show...it's kinda like Chappelle's Show mixed in with The Daily Show. I know that Comedy Central has been looking for that replacement since Dave Chappelle left them high and dry. I think they found that with David Alan Grier.

As for D.L. Hughley...never been a fan of his. I watched about 20 minutes of the first episode, and just turned the channel. I thought his old ABC/UPN sitcom was OK, and his performance in the Kings of Comedy movie was more like I could take it or leave it (I though that Cedric the Entertainer and the late great Bernie Mac stole the entire movie with stand-up acts...Bernie's set was the basis of his sitcom).
