CNN's best hope: Breaking News

I'm watching Anderson Cooper tonight hunkered down and trying to hide from authorities due to security concerns, but still bringing the best and most accurate coverage of the Egyption situation. This is what CNN does best. I maintain this is how CNN can get back on top. Of course, the danger is when the breaking news ends, the ratings end, and then breaking news becomes anything or everything. A conundrum for sure.

The CNN coverage I saw paled in comparison to that provided by Al Jazeera. Having a bureau in Cairo certainly gave them that advantage.

That said, CNN definitely does breaking news very well overall. When people think of breaking news, they think of CNN. People who want news go to CNN, while people who want pundits go elsewhere.

CNN really started making a name for itself during the 1991 Gulf War - more breaking news there that you could shake a scud at.

Since then, it appears CNN - regardless of the troubles attached to its regular programming - is still the go-to place for breaking news. The last time the network has enjoyed a ratings surge? Michael Jackson's death in 2009.

Al Jazeera English would seem to have an advantage too because the army isn't detaining their journalists ...

would be nice if they actually carried Al Jazeera on cable....or even CNN Internationl
