CNN's New 8 PM Show Announced

It was first hinted last week in the New York Post. And now, we get official word that Eliot Spitzer, long rumored to be joining CNN after tryouts at rival MSNBC, will be co-hosting a new 8 PM (ET) show starting this fall. On the as-yet-untitled program, Spitzer will be flanked by Kathleen Parker, the conservative columnist who wrote a popular piece during the 2008 Presidential campaign chiding Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Parker will play counterpoint to the Democrat Spitzer, as the show is expected to follow the format of the popular CNN program "Crossfire."

Update: CNN President Jon Klein comments that the new show will not be anything like "Crossfire," the show Klein cancelled five years ago.

"I don't think these two would be capable of doing a Crossfire-like show with its rote, repetitive, Punch and Judy game-playing... We've never been looking for that and they have no interest in doing it."

I feel obligated to recall a bit of TV history...the origin of the Crossfire format, in my memory, is the Point/Counterpoint segment that closed out 60 Minutes in the 70s and early 80s. Yes...there was another closing segment before the show picked up Andy Rooney! The segment featured print columnist James Kilpatrick (conservative) debating columnist Shana Alexander (liberal) on issues of the day. It was the inspiration for the Dan Aykroyd-Jane Curtin segments on SNL Weekend Update that Aykroyd always began by saying: "Jane, you ignorant slut..."
