Co-located directional antennas to improve coverage?

For an FM or LPFM station, does using two (or more) directional antennas, pointed in opposite directions, improve coverage at lower power? Imagine for a moment that this wouldn't be a problem in regulation.

I gather that an omnidirectional signal "falls off" but a directional antenna can help strengthen it, but only in that direction. Would this trick improve reception at lower powers?

Directional antennas cannot be used to improve ERP in any direction. They are used to reduce ERP in a certain direction to reduce interference to another licensed station.

I've used them and I did not like the results and they can be quite expensive. I also had to hire a surveyor to make sure it was installed to FCC approved specifications.

I would agree with what Cold Coffee says above. If you are achieving your licensed ERP with an omnidirectional antenna then directional antennas will not help you. There are some specific situations where they are useful but great care is needed. One thing though, it is worth checking that your current system is truly omnidirectional. If it is mounted off the side of a tower then it is not omnidirectional.
