Coaching for recorded ad libs

I have an on-air talent who does terrible recorded adlibs--obviously she's not alone if you've listened to other radio stations. How do you deal with that and/or coach through that short-coming? Thanks

When the talent comes in to do the VO, I have them read everything over, give them some words of direction and encouragement, and let them read. When they hit a line that I wanted done differently, I simply repeat it to them with the inflection I wanted. The talent gamely parrots the line as I have instructed....rinse, lather, repeat...then edit it all together. At times, I have done this line by line for an entire :60 spot. I have the talent stick around as I edit, in case something can't be "fixed".It's funny - I thought consolidation would leave us only with the best of the best. It seems, instead, that the opposite has happened. I now work with more primadonnas and savants than ever before. Not only does it seem that they've never even been in a school play, but the only character they know how to portray is "DJ". Fallout of the liner-card culture? Maybe it's because I'm in a small town...?

It's not just small-town radio, it's everywhere. The problem stems from what you thought would solve it: consolidation. The big guys just don't want to pay for talent anymore, so we're stuck with people who just don't know what they're doing.
