COAST 100.9 Classic Rock No More

M

January 5, The Coast 100.9 Classic Rock out of Clyde ceases to exist as it will flip to Country. It will be known as COAST 100.9 North Coast Country. New logo is complete and will be syndicated(duh!) from the same service BAS uses for WLEC, WCPZ, WTTF, etc.

Keeping the "Coast" moniker doesn't make sense as it's associated with the classic rock format.

If this is true it will heavily effect ELB's WKFM/Sandusky, and have an effect on WGAR.

Thanks Dave!!!!! Good to know who can be trusted!

Yee Haw more country? So does that mean Randy Evans(the only live one left) is getting the old BAS boot or will he now have to do All Request Classic Country Saturday Night". Maybe they can run to Wal-Mart & buy him some c.ds to use.
I bet Victory Honda's gonna dump their account faster than they can say Mel Tillis.
What an ingenius move on BASs' part. Northeast Ohio now has 7 COUNTRY STATIONS:
WKKO
WNCO
WKFM
WOBL
WGAR
WCKY
WMJK
Country listeners are comfortably settled in with their station they have. Besides, what piped in morning voice can compete with "Cookin' With Kami"? Or Johnny D on CKY PMD?
Would have been smarter to go CHR...or local FM Talk-oh wait, that would require a staff.

(Bowie) Changes, Funeral for a friend, Steam, The Last Worthless Evening,Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye...
...has to be the 1st time in a while (other than CRSN) they had any non-piped in programming running. Fire up the old local Prophet machine one last time before they move 'em out to Fremont! Listeners were just getting used to it so it's time to flip. Should've never switched it from Majic Oldies. The Casinos sounded good coming across that freq though.

Ray,

Why so uptight? Victory Honda sells cars to country music lovers all the time!

Of those mentioned only WCKY and WKKO pull revenue from a county that WKFM and now Coast, that is Sandusky county.

All about the local revenue.

None of the above, save for WKFM, pull $$ from Erie county. As for Lorain county, WGAR and WKFM are the leaders (assume) and WOBL a distant 3rd.

WCKY is all about Toledo now, and the counties surrounding.

You could almost say the same thing about Classic Rock prior to the flip.

So BAS now operates

92.1 - OLDIES
99.1 - ADULT CONTEMPORARY
100.9 - COUNTRY
102.7 - HOT ADULT CONTEMPORARY
1450 - NOSTALGIA
1600 - NOSTALGIA

And ELB operates

95.3 - ADULT ALBUM ALTERNATIVE
96.1 - COUNTRY
1510 - SPORTS

The smart thing would be for ELB to flip to "Rock" but not just your typical rock station...one that blends in new, classic, world class rock. They could call it "THE ROCK OF THE NORTHCOAST"

Oh well, just an idea at least. And they could get all the Roeder Harley money!

Kentucky, you forgot ELB owns "The Wave"-107.3 Smooth Jazz
Notice neither company has ONE CHR with only Kiss Toledo & Kiss Cleveland on either side. Closest thing to the north is WTWR in Monroe & South is Y105 which leans more toward HAC.
If BAS's reasoning for the Coast country flip is because "WCKY is now Toledo" then why didn't they just make Coast Active Rock/AOR like they should have done when CC sold them & were no longer cousins with WIOT?

Ray,

Why so uptight? Victory Honda sells cars to country music lovers all the time!
Wrong again my name isn't Ray.
Update: Due to their 100% country automation on 100.9 BAS has fired Randy Evans, former host of Classic Rock Saturday Night on WMJK, WCPZ & further back WXKR, making him victim #9 to the "good ole boys' piped in programming.

Sorry I meant to say Aceyacem. ::)

With WLKR-FM carrying so much sports; lots of high school FB & BB, Cavs, Ohio State football/bb and Browns ...what about ESPN 95.3, and carry a simulcast on 1510? It's a daytimer. No impact anyway. Would dominate male demos. Partnered with WKFM's country, men and women, it would be a good combo.

The amount of sports on a AAA just doesn't seem to gel.

That all sports idea didn't work on WLEC, it REALLY wouldn't fly on WLKR( an even SMALLER town). If WLKR went CHR it may not be a bad move like someone said 100.9 should have done but BAS went the wrong direction. WLKR could even make some decent #s with a local FM News/Talk +Sports & the same music they run now in off hours as fill.
Does this change mean WMJK will now run the auto racing on the hilljack station & take it off the "WOHF"? Why would BAS have the nerve to contradict themselves, fire their last live jock & run promos saying they're the "only live & local country" station when they're 100% automation and ALL other surrounding Countrys at least have ONE local show? ???
Will they finally change those old call letters from the Majic days?
Now they can run the Tri County Grain prices in WMJK asa big afternoon feature!
If BAS cared at all about their programming they would have at least made a big deal out of their switch & backtimed into the song on automation at noon Jan 5th & had a big introduction announcing the change instead of just letting the canned country kick in MID SONG!

That makes no sense. WLKR serves the same market as WLEC. And it's an FM. Better quality signal.

Presently WLKR-FM/95.3 is AAA (classic hits based) carrying Indians, Cavs, Ohio State and hs bb and fb.

Your idea is the same except your adding in news and talk. Why run music at all? Would sound out of place.

A 15 minute snapshot of a station should tell someone all they need to know. If tuning in during music programming how would one know that it's a sports/talk station? Perception is reality to a listener.

*Disclaimer - I enjoy WLKR's AAA format. So the below is just merely an idea should there ever be consideration of a format change*

ESPN 95.3 makes more sense. Caters M25-54 and 18-49. Partnered with WKFM's country format, equal parts men and women, plus NASCAR, the sales team would have no issues selling either.

Local flavor can be added with News/Sports Director Truxell and another staffer for PM drive. AM drive would be "Mike and Mike" with local cut ins for news and local sports.

ELB would have a lock on male demos. BAS, jettisoning classic rock, has given up it's male P1s to WXKR, WMMS or WNCX. It's P2 country listeners were most likely already listening to WKFM, WCKY or WGAR. I doubt many in Erie county listen to K100/Toledo.

As for BAS switching on Monday Jan 5. They should've flipped the switch the day before NY's Eve and then, hopefully, had interest via sampling over the holiday weekend. Wed thru Sunday - 5 days of cume sampling missed.

Enough about the BAS formats for a minute. What is happening with the quality of the signals? My goodness, get an engineer that knows what he, or she, is doing. Do they even have an engineer? 100.9 is all over the place. Right now the signal is so hot it's like they're trying to scare the fish out of the water. Read the manual. Call for help. Do something! Just wait until a spring storm comes through and frys an antenna. It happened to 102.7 years ago. If something like that happens again, the fat lady may start singing(probably something from Faith Hill)
