Coast Music

Listening today, notice a VERY TIGHT PLAYLIST and some stuff not heard before on Coast!

Looks like a 3 hour rotation on songs (say goodbye to no repeat workday!) with the highest rotation having Bleeding Love, Stop & Stare, Love Song, Pocketful of Sunshine, Whatever It Takes, In Love With A Girl, Realize and No Air in the heavy category followed quickly by Kid Rock, Gavin Rossdale, Shadow of the Day, Aplogize, Say, Mercy and more following up quickly....but the biggest surprise of the day that knocked me off of my feet.....Santeria by Sublime at about 20 of 4!

Artist separation still needs to be worked on (case in point-Stop & Stare at about 10:10 followed by Timbaland's Apologize-both featuring One Republic) and Maroon 5 Makes Me Wonder at 2:43 and then Wake Up Call at 3:31......but the people who are the demo at work commented today after I asked if they liked the music that they thought they had changed stations.....

Well if they keep going in that direction they could end up with Elvis Duran and The Morning Zoo mornings. So far the show is only on CHR CC stations but considering the kind of show it is I think music format might be secondary.

I noticed this movement towards CHR as well. Two days ago, I heard Finger Eleven's "Paralyzer" during AM Drive. This is not the type of song that is played on most conventional AC stations. However, if one believes that the Modern Adult Contemporary format still exists (similar to WBMX/Boston), Finger Eleven might qualify as AC.

There are many, many markets with two CHR stations. WSNE could be headed in that direction. Perhaps CC is throwing in the towel (after several decades) regarding trying to defeat Lite Rock 105. Moreover, as a previous poster mentioned, flipping to CHR could provide Clear Channel with yet another opportunity to save money by putting Elvis Duran on for AM Drive.

I wouldn't say they sound CHR. It sounds more Hot AC, at this point. It looks as though they are trying to split Lite & Pro.

Finger Eleven "Paralyzer" IS a Hot AC hit (or was, it is now in recurrent on most Hot AC's). The percentage of Hot AC's that would qualify as "Modern" is decreasing as they relied heavily on Modern Rock tracks...and that format is going through a rough time. Now, most Hot AC's are embracing the adult friendly pop songs that get lost between Flo Rida & Lil Wayne on CHR.

Pro-FM and WSNE are so close to each other on the dial that you could cause lots of confusion by changing to almost identical formats. What are the ratings for WSNE compared to Pro-FM? I'm thinking that such a close format change could actually help Coast.

If you consider they just picked up Ryan Seacrest, who melds very well with Hot AC, I wouldn't be surprised if The Coast was indeed evolving toward this direction.

Of course, John Tesh is on some Hot AC stations himself.

They've been down this hot ac road before and within the last 3 years even jumped on that bandwagon where they play anything and everything on weekends. They never stuck with anything long enough. And as has been said before they don't promote so the only people who know about changes are their present listeners.I think hot ac is the right direction for them but I don't see them being any more successful at eating into PRO-FM's audience than they were at Lite's.Tad and Brian are not going to steal Giovanni and Kim's audience and after morning drive Coast is really not that competitive.Regardless of the Seacrest and Tesh changes anything they do is caused by cost cutting. If they want to be a hot ac they need a hot new staff and that won't happen.

But the confusion is to their detriment and Citadel's benefit. I would think listeners would hear the songs and identify more with PRO-FM, unless Coast throws liners between EVERY song, which would turn people away.

There's no identical format here. The urban top 40 music will not be played at Coast unless it's mellower and more mass appeal like Irreplaceable. Also from what little I've heard Coast may have added new tunes but hasn't stopped playing Faith Hill and Whitney Houston type AC songs. Maybe that's coming down the line. I don't get playing Santeria. Unless you've been doing the format for a long time your audience never even heard that song before. In Providence you'd probably have to be a WBRU listener to know it although HJY may spin it. Lyrically it's also not the best shot for a station like Coast.

No Whitney, No Faith at all during the past 2 midday/afternoons....I think they are leaning more toward the Rock side in the older stuff they play and Santeria may have tested out the roof at HJY, so they threw it into the mix....more Dave Matthews than before....I think they are trying to be like the old BOS before the format change (and for that matter, the old MIX 98.5 back in the late 90's)

Sometimes, when flipping (or in this case, tweaking) a format, you may have to introduce recurrents or gold that test well at the format but were never played on said station...or else keep playing the aforementioned Whitney, Faith Hill, Michael Bolton, etc. WXLO, Mix 98.5 and KISS 108 are all playing the record, so it's not a total stretch to have it on the air at Coast.

Now the big question is how much patience will Clear Channel have after the changes are done. Coast has never steered in one direction for very long.
