Coast no longer hot ac

Per R&R & also clearchanneladds.com, Coast is now mainstream AC.

From the times they are a'changing department
New Bob Seger getting only mainstream AC airplay in Providence. I bought his new CD & granted he doesn't believe in blazing any new trails, but is there nothing HJY can play from this?
New Dylan will probably get no Providence airplay.
Kanye West is opening for the Stones. Yeah that'll be a great place for a tailgate party.

thank god. Hot AC is boring anyway. Tahts more along the lines of Lite 105. Coast needs to hip up their station and ratings

Um no. Hot AC isn't the boring one. Mainstream AC is the boring one.
Buh bye Outkast. Hello Michael Bolton.
Pretty soon 93.3 and 105 will sound identical except that the morning team on 105 sounds like they've actually met each other.

LMAO :p @ "Pretty soon 93.3 and 105 will sound identical except that the morning team on 105 sounds like they've actually met each other."

I thought I heard some classic rock on Coast this weekend.

i actually cant believe joannie and brian have lasted this long.... listning to that station years ago when it was "joans and joan" they sounded good and there was chemistry between them..... joan and brian i still think is a terrable team.... there tryin to make joan out to be a personallity she isnt know for.... brian belongs on a station like profm or something and joan should be on a lite 105 kinda station just my opinion.... so if the sttion is gonna go after like.... the "morning crew " needs and adjustment as well

I was about to call you on the "Brian on PRO-FM" idea, but realistically if you're there for the liners & comedy he really wouldn't be out of place. If you're being a personality you should be able to divorce yourself from the music & aim your act at the audience. The world is full of morning CHR personalities who are there because of content & not to talk up Pussycat Dolls posts.

the only reason i suggest brian on a profm type station is cause of the gimmicks and his personally..... like i said its my opinion but i just dont think he fits in at coast.... especially the direction there going..... and i dont think he fits well with joan....

What Coast should do

Instead of making Coast sound almost exactly like Lite 105, Clear Channel should copy the type of format they have on Hartford's WHCN, 105.9 The River. I think that Clear Channel would find a niche with an adult rock/rock AC-type format. It would be their opportunity to play some music that isn't being played in Providence now that would appear on a AAA chart, but still play a lot of older rock hits that "test well" and have high listenership.

Great idea Jacko.... if they didn't have B101 and HJY in the same building. There's enough music shared between B101 abd HJY. Throwing another station in the mix that plays similar or some of the music would be suicide.

But that's an easy fix... B101 drops it's 80s stuff and goes back to a more 60s-70s rotation (like Oldies 103.3) and HJY skews slightly more active rock and away from classic rock.

Still not a good idea. Those stations are obviously where they are musically for a reason. So tweaking them older and younger to make room for another station that's going to take a piece of the male 25-54 pie is a bad programming move.

Clear Channel has never really figured out how to program against Citadel, they just seem to spend their time working against each other.

I like doing this stuff, but on the other hand I hate doing it in the dark in terms of demos, TSL, cume, etc...but here we go. First of all, what does Coast want? It seems to me they want to nip at both PRO-FM & LITE with more concentration on LITE now. Assume it's best to continue along those lines rather than switch gears (again). We also apparently are forced to look at what the other 2 stations in the building are doing, which to me is one of the worst side effects of multiple station ownership, but obviously it's necessary. Unfortunately AC, regardless of which version, is the most difficult format to program when it comes to the music.
(1) Dump the 70s. All of them. Don't even think about the 60s.
(2) Dump any 80s music B101 is playing, which eliminates all the rock-based stuff. Forget what HJY is doing. They don't factor into anything Coast may do.
(3) Concentrate more heavily on the 90s & post-Y2K music. Maybe go with 75% 1990 & beyond & 25% 80s because dumping what B101 plays means having to choose carefully when deciding what 80s music to play.
(4) Add currents when they're recurrents & proven on every other format already. That means Unwritten makes it on the air at Coast right about now.
(5) Keep it female-friendly & mainstream. When in doubt, don't play it.
(6) No staff changes & NO WHOOPI.

The above is a boring format. I wouldn't listen to it, but women settle into boring radio once they start growing out of CHR. Barring an outright format change I don't see Coast making major moves numbers-wise simply because I don't believe people shop around for different stations that often. Right now Coast sounds good, but there's still a lot of music getting played that's being played elsewhere in the building.
