I like doing this stuff, but on the other hand I hate doing it in the dark in terms of demos, TSL, cume, etc...but here we go. First of all, what does Coast want? It seems to me they want to nip at both PRO-FM & LITE with more concentration on LITE now. Assume it's best to continue along those lines rather than switch gears (again). We also apparently are forced to look at what the other 2 stations in the building are doing, which to me is one of the worst side effects of multiple station ownership, but obviously it's necessary. Unfortunately AC, regardless of which version, is the most difficult format to program when it comes to the music.
(1) Dump the 70s. All of them. Don't even think about the 60s.
(2) Dump any 80s music B101 is playing, which eliminates all the rock-based stuff. Forget what HJY is doing. They don't factor into anything Coast may do.
(3) Concentrate more heavily on the 90s & post-Y2K music. Maybe go with 75% 1990 & beyond & 25% 80s because dumping what B101 plays means having to choose carefully when deciding what 80s music to play.
(4) Add currents when they're recurrents & proven on every other format already. That means Unwritten makes it on the air at Coast right about now.
(5) Keep it female-friendly & mainstream. When in doubt, don't play it.
(6) No staff changes & NO WHOOPI.
The above is a boring format. I wouldn't listen to it, but women settle into boring radio once they start growing out of CHR. Barring an outright format change I don't see Coast making major moves numbers-wise simply because I don't believe people shop around for different stations that often. Right now Coast sounds good, but there's still a lot of music getting played that's being played elsewhere in the building.
