Cochran radio tower on the ground

Paging Jovial Jay......
Doing a little looking on the FCC database to see what's going on here - Questions:
1. I can't find the FM station located on WDCO tower.
2. 96.7, licensed to Chester, does not have a CP. Or Calls - at least on FCC database(which has been wrong before)
3. 107.5, also owned by Ga Eagle, is not licensed to be on the WDCO tower - whose FM antenna is on the tower shown on the video.
4. What benefit is there in reducing antenna HAAT 150 feet(AM or FM)?
5. Have you heard from Unc' Vernon lately?

Just curious - not tryin' to stir up no dust..........

Ah yes, brings back memories of Happy Howard Williamson.

A tower only gets like that after YEARS of neglect. Properly taken care of and maintained and it won't rust like that. I know two towers off the top of my head here in Louisville (Kentucky) that have been standing for over 50 years.

And I always find it funny when a reporter tries to explain something that is just slightly technical.

Two words for the new-tower crew:

1. Weep Holes.

2. Paint.

1. W246BR has a CP to move to 96.7 on the site of the former WDCO/WDXQ. An application is pending for a CP to reduce height on the AM.

2. 96.7 is an allocation application for Chester. No license or CP.

3. 107.5 (WRWR-FM) is located on a tower located near the intersection of U.S. 23/129 and Ga Hwy 96. It is licensed.

4. Under 200 feet...no paint, no lights. 90 degrees at 1440 is 170 feet, so we're a bit better than a quarter-wave.

5. Nothing from our Uncle. I really, really need to go see him.

No worries about a little dust. Makes you enjoy the fresh, clean air.

Hey Bengalsfan, how did you know Happy?

I worked in Vienna and Hawkinsville back in the day. EVERYBODY knew Happy! I interviewed with him once. I saw the mobile home park and knew this was not a place I needed to be...that was before I saw the inside of the station.

Jay...
The third tower since 1980. How does a station go through that many towers? Was it just ignored and not kept up?. I've worked for some crazy S*B's over the years but they all kept the tower up to keep us on the air.

uncle vernon and happy howard were definitely

a couple of unforgettable radio characters. are they still with us or have (hope not) signed off?

daryll, i didn't know you worked in cochran radio. are you still with the cable outfit in macon? bb

bb, I left Cox ten years ago and have been selling for 13WMAZ ever since. Thanks for asking.

I just don't recall this tower being replaced in 1980. I'm not sure where this info came from. I followed the station very closely until I was hired in April 1980. Responding to complaints about the station/Happy, the FCC gave the station a thorough inspection in September 1981 and I had to walk around and answer their questions about the place. We were cited for an EBS infraction (monitor wasn't in the main controlroom) and a severely fading and flaking tower.

Happy was granted control of what was then WVMG 96.7 and 1440 in December 1979 and flipped the FM to Top 40 from Southern Gospel on January 7, 1980. The previous owners (Dr. Hunt Sanders and John Johnson) had it for only two years after the fire burned the original building on December 13, 1977. They got it back on the air December 28, 1977 in a doublewide with all new Harris equipment wired by Jim Popwell, Jr. A CP was granted in late '78 for a circularly polarized FM antenna but the tower was not replaced. That's only facilities modification I knew of after the original fire. A second fire destroyed the 15 year-old doublewide studios on September 11, 1992.
