Colin Boyd fired from Free FM

From his MySpace:

On Friday afternoon, shortly after The Colin Boyd Show and much in the manner these things are always handled in radio, my "position was terminated" at 101.5, Free FM. I was, unceremoniously, Showbiz Bitchslapped.

The Big Picture and The Colin Boyd Show no longer exist at that station, and while it took roughly 11 years there to build what I've left behind, it took about 40 seconds to hear why I was no longer wanted or needed at the station.

I was told it was budget cutbacks, and I can't believe the management said it with a straight face. Because that's not really true.

So thank you all for your support of both shows since you started listening, whether it was last week, six months ago, or if you go all the way back with me to the glory days of The Zone, when I was alongside John Holmberg or Chuck Powell, both fine broadcasters and friends.

The Big Picture will live on, however. BigPictureRadio.com is my own site, so we'll still have reviews and everything else, trying to keep it business as usual over there.

We'll also start podcasting the show on that site and possibly here at My Space and on iTunes, as well. I do believe, though, that it's only a matter of time before the Damn Dirty Apes wind up back on the air somewhere, and in a more supportive environment than the one I'm leaving behind.

I'll still be writing reviews and interviews for College Times and in Las Vegas City Life, as well, so I'll still be around.

If you have anything to say, I'd welcome your thoughts either through this page or via e-mail at [email protected].

If you'd like to speak to the parties responsible, they're pretty easy to find. You can use [email protected] or something. Maybe it's [email protected]. Either way, feel free to give 'em the business.

So a guy with a weekend show and a new one hour show gets canned. Normally I'd say "so what?"

But Colin has been at that station forever. Not as a major player, but he's been part of the Zone/Free for a long, long time.

He's kinda like the kicker on a football team, ya know? The sort of guy who doesn't play every game, but has the team scoring record regardless.

What does it tell you when a team fires their kicker?

Sorry to hear about this. I didn't get the chance to listen to the Big Picture much but when I did, I thought it was a good local show. Hopefully Mr. Boyd will land on his feet with a better opportunity.

So according to the PD...he was forced to fire Mr Boyd after Colin got into a pissing match with the GM.

At least Colin lasted longer with cBS than Holmberg did! ;D That and he's better off moving to a station that gets ratings!

Colin had been around for 11 years and had lived through the Zone’s good ol’ Holmberg days, Chuck Powell, the pop format change, the rock format change and even managed to make the Free FM transition.   He was the anchor that held that station together.  Through all of the changes, there was hope as long as Colin Boyd was still there.  The fact that he got fired tells you a lot about the current management at Free FM.  They have gotten rid of their anchor and they are letting that station go to waste.  The good news is that any station has more listeners than Free FM and any station would be lucky to have him  :)

I cant even listen to the station anymore I really hope Colin and Jayter land somewhere soon. WHAT THE HELL WAS FREE THINKING

The Nurse and I say at least he doesn't have to deal with PK files anymore. It just causes a lot of static on the air.

Free fm sucks, you'll move on to bigger and better jobs. The gm is no doubt taking a dump in his shorts. The ratings are taking a dive and they need a fall guy. He's like Dennis Green,he's next to go and he knows it.Good luck.
