College radio @ 98.3 coming to Columbus?

I stumbled on a CP for a translator for Marble Cliff at 98.3. It looks like a translator for WSLN, Ohio Wesleyan's Student-Run FM. Looks like it will originate from just west of the Lennox shopping center?

Thing is, how are they going to receive the flea-powered 98.7 in Columbus? To my knowledge to rebroadcast a station on a translator in the commerical band (above 92.1) you must pull the signal over air.

You're right...And I know some pretty crazy engineers who use some very high-end antennaes to do the trick from miles and miles away...

They mention a transmitter upgrade on their web site: http://wsln.owu.edu/

I wonder how much they can really boost with 98.9 on the first adjacent. It would seem backwards to apply for and be granted a CP for a translator unless they already have a plan.

You would be surprised how much the right antenna can make all the difference. People have been able to sustain a 11Mb wireless connection over 100 miles using antenna gain only.<P ID="signature">______________

All I receive is WYKL-Crestline which is about 50 miles away. Perhaps WSLN is off the air right now? What about that 98.9 interference? That area is right down by the super tower.
I dunno?

Trick_Magnet

Class D stations can upgrade now to the equivalent of an LP-100, unless otherwise limited by interference protection rules of 73.509.

Previously, they were limited to 10 watts transmitter output (but could use multi0bay antennas for gain and high transmit location)

Last time I was up towards Deleware 98.7 was not on... In fact I think I only heard them on once when I was up that way and I heard a dead carrier.

Hopefully they can get it back on and if they indeed are going to be broadcast on this 98.3 translator in columbus, they will provide something different to the Columbus airwaves (even if it's College Radio)

There is already a college radio station in Columbus, and it's up in Westerville and it's 101.5 WOBN. They are on-air 24/7 even right now during the summer because they are running Prophet NexGen with their students live while school is in session. They are alternative, being alternative longer than CD101 has been on-air! If they had some decent power, they would give a lot of stations here in town a run for their money!

I agree, I am not a big fan of alternative and I like the stuff 101.5 WOBN "The Rock" plays.. Now only if they had more power!

When you don't have to worry about ratings or revenue like they don't, you can play whatever you want. That's what makes satellite radio and cable tv so appealing to some people. It's a niche thing and good to have around for a choice.

I know about 101.5. I think you misread my subject. Anyway, I listen to them when in the Westerville area, but I live near Mill Run, so 95% of the time I can't pick them up. I don't know how much power they 'could' bump up to, with spacing requirements, etc.

edit: It looks like height is the only thing really killing them. Those 28 watts could cover a good portion of the metro at about 500 feet.

They also have some really good night programs on at about 8 or 9ish. Some of it is talk, but alot of it is like "mixtape" stuff.

even though it's not on a radio dial, there's Ohio State University's student-run radio station, KBUX/The Underground, live on the web via Real Player at
www.underground.fm. i'm the station's latin and new world music director. music here at kbux is just about to recieve more latin/new world music airplay during the week starting the week of Oct 2, 2005. kbux is still the home of the best independent loud rock, metal, latin/new world, jazz, hip-hop, and electronic music on the planet. other than cd101, kbux plays more ohio bands than any rock station in columbus.
