College Radio

I posted something similar in another section of these boards; In a city where they have three to four college stations going to waste.

THE QUESTION:
How does college radio work, and who decides what they play?

I bring this up because of the Delaware and Seattle school radio stations and what they've been able to do with them.
Could ANY city with a college radio station feature dance - if they WANTED to?

Does anyone even think it makes sense to have an additional college station that leans urban - when you already have a whole stash of urbans in the SAME town?

Just curious.

Wow No love:-(

College radio works depending on the situation. Sometimes the students pick and others could be by an advisor or radio station manager. The problem is that normally if the students pick its a free for all and if there is a station manager they have been there for 20 years and stuck in their ways.

WMPH and C89.5 are/were High school stations.

Z88.9 is a college station

This reminds me off Orlando's college station WUCF 89.9 Jazz & More.I believe 90% of their shows are Jazz based.

The college stations in the town I'm particularly talking about have changed a bit in the last twenty years, so I believe poeple and things have changed up a bit. They are focused on either playing some obscure old school hip hop (at least one of th em are) and some of them play some "strange" stuff that makes me wonder if anyone is truly listening to this stuff.

Maybe it's just me, but I think dance may have a better following than:

Keep in mind that this is all on a college station - within the same town that wont even play Edward Maya's track and has a rhythmic station playing Rick Ross & La Roux, but, for some reason, wont touch "grenade" by Bruno Mars or "yeah 3x" by Chris Brown....etc. (there's more to the story, but I'll just leave it at that).

Who's picking these songs?

A progressive/eclectic urban is actually a nice change from mainstream hiphop & tightly playlisted R&B. Does this station stream?

I believe the one with the more recognizable music in my first post of songs does, but keep in mind that you'll have to know the schedule to know exactly when they're playing what you like.

That station has always been the better out of all college stations.

They even play zydeco.

I guess the college station(s) aren't that bad as they are, but.. there's four of them!

Again it depends on the college radio station. If students are running it, they will play what they want. If its an advisor or station manager, they decide. The primary reason for college radio stations are for educational purposes. Meaning learning how to broadcast.

I have a show on my college station 90.3 The Core in central NJ and I play dance music. The DJs at my station are allowed to play anything they want.
