College web radio streaming software suggestion?

Hi!

I am a TV broadcast engineer who has a friend at a college who would like to build a small radio studio that will feed a part-15 FM transmitter as well as web-stream.

What free or under $300.00 automation software for Windows do you prefer and why?

Thanks,
Dan

You will probably get two main suggestions in here:

StationPlaylist $100-$500
http://www.stationplaylist.com/

Zara Studio $Free
http://www.zarastudio.es/en/index.php

I like StationPlaylist because it's easy to use and has a lot of features. You can use the free demo for 30 days to see if you like it. I think Zara is free, but I haven't played with it much. A lot of folks in here like it though.

There is also a pay version of Zara that adds a lot of features that you might find to be helpful. It is quite reasonably priced. Another favorite is Raduga, which has a long track record of being very reliable.

Here's another vote for StationPlaylist. I used the Pro suite for my former oldies-format webstream and I'm helping launching a high school station that will be using it as well. It's a nice system and I think it's a bargain for the price.

If you need some additional background on it you can check out the StationPlaylist Pro review in Radio World, which I authored.

Will Station Playlist play back Mp4 files? Or will I have to convert everything to a WAV first? Just curious... it could come in handy as a TX site last resort backup without paying through the nose for the other big boy software that's at all the studios.

I never tried it to be honest, it may. If I get a chance I'll give it a try.

Let's take a look...

StationPlaylist Studio Help File said:
Studio supports playing the following file formats:
Audio: MP2, MP3, MP4/M4A (LC-AAC, HE-AAC), OGG, WAV (PCM,MP2,MP3), FLAC, APE, WMA, SND, AIFF, CDA (Audio CD)
Video: MPEG/MPG (MPEG-2), AVI, WMV, ASF
Other files: M3U, PLS, ASX, EXE, BAT, CMD.

Plain AAC files (.AAC file extension) without an MPEG-4 header are not currently supported.

For lossless file storage, we recommend FLAC for best performance. This provides full CD audio (WAV) sound quality but at a reduced file size of around 50 to 60% of the original WAV size. See http://flac.sourceforge.net.

For lossy file storage, we recommend Ogg Vorbis at quality 5 or 6. This format provides better sound quality at lower file sizes than MP3 and most other formats. See http://vorbis.com.

So yes, it would appear ;)

Okay, it supports the kitchen sink! Thanks for the information!! I'll let everyone know how it works out as the "plan c" system if the STLs are down.
