Collin County FM translators on 99.9 and 104.1

Some time back, I noticed that these two translators popped up here in Collin County. Both stations are licensed to McKinney, but actually transmit from near Lucas, and are translators for AM stations.

Per the FCC database, 99.9 is directional towards McKinney (with a secondary lobe towards Wylie). 104.1 is directional towards Allen and Plano, with a secondary lobe towards Lake Lavon.

Both seem to blast in pretty well in both Central Plano and McKinney, despite coverage contours that suggest that 99.9 should be pretty weak in Plano and 104.1 should be weak in McKinney. I can't help but suspect that their actual facilities don't match up with their licensed patterns.

Just wondering how far away people are receiving a good signal on these translators.

It's not surprising if their licensed patterns don't reflect what's actually on the air. I saw a broadcaster who's on a local San Antonio translator, 99.9, for that reason. Seems 99.9 is co-owned with 87.9 Fort Worth which really should be on 87.75, but has been on 87.9 for a good while now. Whoever the owner is, I guess he's lucky not to get hit by the Government.

KYNC is another high-powered Low power that gets out way better than they should and K240DS is still alive and kicking for all these years originating their own programming. Seems to be the norm for DFW to let these guys run wild.

I would suspect they are running non-directional, though I'm trying to figure out why either facility would need to be directional in the first place.
