Colorado Fires

Interesting that our local news station AM 740, in Colorado Springs does not have constant fire coverage (400 homes lost in Black Forest alone!), but nearly all of the local TV stations do have constant coverage. (5, 11, 13, 21)

Such a horrible disaster nearly one year after Waldo Canyon. What's going on here??

Not sure why you are surprised by this, considering who owns KVOR. Just who would they put in the studio for wall to wall coverage? And by the way, KVOR's transmitter site is located in....wait for it...Black Forest.

For being in the Black Forest, trees are far and few between around that transmitter.
More like high desert.
Fire was a couple miles away to the South through East.

That would explain the dead air I heard during the fire. When driving up 83 after Flying Horse, there is a pine tree on the left that looks taller than the others. Could that be the transmitter or just a cell-phone tower, disguised within a pine tree?

That tree is a cell phone tower. The transmitter is out on the flat land of grass...6 towers. They lost communication from the studio to the transmitter...according to the OM he said the 'special phone line went down' LOL Surprised that there was not a regular dial up not available or a microwave shot...that would be a couple hops...but...I guess in the terms of cost cutting.....

KVOR put their programming in sister 1300 kkcs the sports animal. The animals programming went to the .com feed.

Parts of the Forest lost power...not sure if that included the KVOR site...and if they have a backup genset or not...or even if it worked/s. Been a few years since I worked for them.

You mention the coverage from the TV stations...how about the fact that they could NOT communicate with the chopper pilot? The pilot was just flying around and zooming in on things...and the air talent had NO idea where he was at or what they were looking at! You are telling me that KKTV could not get one of THEIR reporters in the chopper to do a live fly over? Obviously not on terms with your 'sister' station? LOL How bout RENTING a chopper between the 4 stations and having a live 'pool' feed? Honestly...the coverage was fine...if you wanted to hear 'how do you feel' questions and mass speculation. I will admit the best bit WAS the chopper shots...but the lack of commentary to accompany...oh my.....

Well Colorado Springs is NOT Denver, OK ?? Therefore lack of communication between the studios & the chopper is not a surprise

Because we're talking about the Colorado Springs stations, they likely RENTED the chopper & only had room for the photographer (If that). They probably only had a chopper with a camera mounted somewhere (Thus making it a pool chopper)

Now if we were talking the Denver stations here (Who cover fires North of Denver as well as around it), I'd see your point

Cheers & 73 ;D
