Columbia (Kind of) NCE Applications

For the the non-Commission geeks, the FCC concluded a filing window for new stations in the reserved (88.1-91.9) band. The Commission does not accept applications for new stations all the time. It accepts them in batches... and the opportunities are far and few, with many years in between.

During the October window, the Commission knew it was going to be inundated by applications and that a number of organizations would file a large number of applications. It, therefore, limited each applicant to 10 total applications.

Based on quotes, the average cost of preparing an application ranged from 3k-15k, per.

In the Columbia area, there is going to be a fight over 88.7 to be licensed to Saluda and/or Batesburg.

Among the applicants are Benedict College and Jeff Roper's wife. With few exceptions, most of the applicants are religious groups.

The proposals range from Benedict's Class A running about what WZMJ does, to proposals for a Class C3.

The Commission got flooded, so your best best is to go to fcc.gov/mb/audio and do a cbds application search.

We didn't have the cash to play in this particular round. I am not convinced they could shoe-horn in a C3 so close to 88.5 Cayce, which is also a C3. But I may be wrong.

I knew there would be a flood of apps since this part of the band doesn't get new app's window very often. I was approached by a couple of groups wanting us apply in this round but we have different plans.

Just curious. Is this the kind of thing WMHK and CIU would apply for to get a sister stick? Also, what would Jeff Roper's wife want with this? Is that a front because he can't file since he works in the market? Or is she also a broadcaster?

WMHK/CIU did not participate.

The closest available allocation on the band to Columbia was 88.7 in Saluda.

I don't know a thing about Angie Roper. She's also the licensee for WJES-AM.
