I was told by someone whose family lived here, that by the time WTTG got to Columbia via microwave, the signal wasn't all that good, and was kind of muddy and lacking sharp detail, similar to low-bitrate online video. WTTV Bloomington had similar issues by the time it got to Huntington, WV via microwave in the late 1970s. "Watching it through wax paper" is the best way I know how to put it.

I also noticed a similarly degraded picture when I saw WPSD-6 from Paducah KY on Mount Vernon IL cable in the mid-1980s. They probably didn't get it via microwave, though. Might have been some deficiency in the cable system, and to be fair, the same could have been true of WTTG and WTTV.
