Good job B106 in Columbia staying on top of the severe weather in SC Saturday. They boasted about being LIVE and LOCAL. This was one of the worst outbreaks of tornadoes statewide in a long time. I was at the St. Patrick's festivities in downtown Columbia until the fire and police department told people to leave. No other station except sister station Oldies 103 had live coverage. As for televison, WIS and WLTX went wall to wall leaving WOLO far behind of course. It's times like these you see who's got their priorities together. Clear Channel obviously lacked as well only breaking in with NWS bulletins. Anyone have stories to share?

If there is one thing that I learned(and I'm certain TJ did, too) working with Jonathan when he was the PD at WNOK, it was to make sure we were on top of weather events just like this one...know how to run the EBS(and ultimately EAS) tests, alerts and, when necessary, originate them when necessary(the freak tornado that tore thru Lexington back in the 90s comes to mind). The importance he attached to our close adherence to the EBS/EAS system, in my opinion, helped make NOK the force in the community that it was (and hasn't been in subsequent years). It also was UNBELIEVABLY helpful to me and our station(Beach 104) here on the Outer Banks in September 2003 during Hurricane Isabel. JR always said that one of the main advantages radio had over print and television media was the immediacy of radio.

Having said that, I sincerely hope all of you and your families came out unscathed after yesterdays storms. We're supposed to be getting that same weather front today(tho it's not expected to be near as bad as what the Atl, Georgia and South Carolina areas experienced).
 
WOW!!! This was the first I heard about the storms that hit the midlands. I am glad to see atleast B106 was on top of what happened. Back in the late 80's and 90's even with a top 40 format NOK was always good at covering storms and I am glad to see that live and local radio still does work... That is something that CC and the rest need to look at... Sometimes the bottom line hurts the very people radio is supposed to entertain. Scott I remember those storms back in 94 that hit Lexington CO... I was running a Skywarn net on two repeaters one out of Little Mtn and the other one right outside of Lexington... I had only had my ham license about 5 months, but that did not stop me from grabbing things and running with it... I hope everyone is safe and had no damage... CC1
 
There is significant damage to personal properties with hardest hit areas like Newberry county. There are so many other reports that WIS is dedicating a news show Sunday morning at 10 to go over the events.

Elgin/Lake Carolina were hit worse than the Clemson Road area. I came come to find that the winds had blown open a set of french doors at Rose Creek. Pretty amazing... especially since the dog appeared to have stayed calm and in the house the entire time.

WXRY was live from 5 Points, but once the first front rolled through at 4:00, we had to pack everything up and stow the tent to keep it from getting blown away. That pretty much ended live broadcasts from Five Points, which was spared much of the effects of the storm. If we hadn't had everybody in Five Points, we would have done more besides running the NWS EAS.
 
Excellent job to Dave Ryan and an unknown person who was with him at B92 (Charleston) for keeping listeners informed throughout the evening. He was on top of things getting the info out just as quick as they came in.

All CC stations were broadcasting their TV partner and Citadel was cutting in with Emergency Alert System.
 
I give B-106 props yes however WCOS FM was on top of the whole thing also. I heard them once every 10 min talk about the warnings and the storm. I also heard the National Weather People on the air besides the EBS broadcast. so I feel WCOS was up to date with everything also...as far as the other CC stations I dont know did not scan around the dial.
 
Didn't catch WCOS. However, caught B106. They had a live meteorolgist on and took listener calls with storm damage. I couldn't believe I was getting this from a local station. I'm glad WCOS did something. But the ones that should hang their heads in shame is WVOC. Aren't they the ones that say "you'll hear it here first" and "when news breaks out, we break in". They need to add, if it's Monday through Friday and someone happens to be in the building.
 
Yeah my bad about WCOS. I didn't realize they went live. I was listening to B106 and scanning the dial as well. Same for WVOC, I checked them and they were airing reruns. Shame. As for 99.3 WXRY, I did see you guys out yesterday and thought your location at the event was pretty awesome. Everything was packing up after 4pm yesterday down there. It was a very interesting day to say the least.

I really wish that there were more stations in this market that cared about the community like B 106 does and it shows how well run they really are.
