Columbia Spring Ratings

Not much of discussion. Big DM still killing it as the king of Columbia. Kiss moving to 103.1 really paid off as well. The Beat is barely beating Hot. WNOK continues to spike back up. I think it's past time for a CHR battle. As for Flashback, they are barely hanging on. Sad to say, but they are actually tied with Eagle out of Augusta!

My wish: A new CHR in Columbia. 92.1 anyone? How about 92.1 as ZOO 92 battling WNOK? An active rocker wouldnt hurt either. But who would take the bait?

It is quite apparent that something needs to change here in the Columbia market. We could definitely use another CHR and am not sure about 92.1 or 94.3 for that matter. I ahve always thought that this market could handle two country stations, but for as long as I can remember, no one has been able to touch WCOS.

It is apparent that 92.1 isn't going to change formats anytime soon which makes me suspicious as to whether 92.1 and 94.3 will be sold sometime in the near future. Ya know, if we all contributed 10 cents we might could buy these two and get back to real radio. As far as another Country radio station in the market other than WCOS, look at the music on 92 vs 'COS. Rotation is awful, music is in the wrong categories, and the selection is poor on 92. It's a wonder the ratings are as high as they are. So do you hate to love it or love to hate it...radio....miss the good ole' days.........................

I definitely agree, New 92 has always tried to be another WCOS and it has always failed. Even having Jeff Roper there could not work. If they are going to be a "new country station," then they need to act like one or just seel the darn thing because it and 94.3 are absolutely hideous.

I've watched the New 92 discussion over the years with interest. They seemed to have started out with the best of intentions and certainly sold Jeff and I on the idea of coming back to Columbia to take on Clear Channel. In my opinion, things started unraveling the very first week of 2005 when I moved back. Reneging on agreements, both verbal and written, was the writing on the wall that I noticed immediately. And honestly, Margaret Wallace, the GM at the time, tried her very best to make things happen, but the chain of command there back then was convoluted and flawed...apparently fatally. I hear people say stuff about Jeff Roper and I am always very quick to say that during our time together at New 92, Jeff was nothing but supportive and gracious in his dealings with me and as far as I'm concerned, we were always on the same sheet of music regarding the direction of New 92. My differences with the organization started and ended with the PD...then again, I apparently wasn't privy to his set of marching orders from the "higher ups" that he had to answer to...but I can tell you that the list of people that he had to answer to wasn't long. I feel for people like Eric Chaney and Tim Miller. They are both awesome guys and talents who worked as hard as they both could day in and day out to make New 92 and Legends as good as they could make it under the circumstances.

I have seen people wrtie that new 92 had far better music than wcos but I am sorry I like country music and alot of the so called new country music is very far from country music should be. new 92 always seemed to lean toward that new sound so I didn't care for it. Legends 94.3 was great but never had a new song which doesn't work either. If you want a station that would give wcos a run and I can't see why you would but then you need people with a good country feel and DJ mix. People that make the stations seem like a part of home to Columbia and gives them that natural feel like they are really a part of your community and a part of your life, something that relates to the people of Columbia and the surounding areas.

The fact that Columbia hasn't supported a second Country station is a puzzler. A market this conservative theoretically should be able to support a second one.

As far as a CHR battle: I would love to see that as well. I've also thought that WNOK and B-106 should be closer musically, kind of a "Hot A/C" battle. Not many people know this but in it's infancy, B-106 was Adult CHR in the evenings and if memory serves correctly, they either beat or tied WNOK in the 18-34. New management didn't see eye-to-eye with this approach and deep-sixed it.

All:

I agree. I think the answer is that Columbia should be able to support two well programmed country stations. Until Benchmark bought 96.7, Kicks 96 was doing well. But then again, it was well-focused and had the winds of the New-Country craze blowing at its back.

I don't see why another country station couldn't make it in Columbia but if your up againest WCOS you better do it right the first time. Right now the country music format kinda sucks with cross overs and pop/rock mixed into it. The over play of certain singers/groups like Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts, Sugarland, to name a few with their popish sound isn't going to make it. I have had people call me on the phone when a Jason Aldean song came on with the overly loud rock gituar asking if I could cut back on his music. Yesterday I was at a new costumers business and our station was playing in the background. When I asked the owner if he listened to us most of the time( a younger fellow ) he said all the time except when Rascal Flatts comes on then off goes the radio. So if your going to run a second country station in the Columbia market it needs to be country kinda like WCOS but different too.

You know they have supported two country stations in the Greenville and Charlotte markets for years. You look at WESC and WSSL and there is definitely a difference in the two stations. WESC has always been the old country station or the redneck country station as I have always called it and when I lived in Anderson, I primarily listened to WESC, and then there is WSSL which is the new country station and even though there is some overlap in songs, there is a distinct difference in their formats and there alwyas has been and that is the problem here in Columbia. I get sick of the Taylor Swift junk especially, but unfortunately that is what is selling right now, so I guess we have to hear it or change the channel, but WWNU in my opinion has never porgrammed their station to 'new country" successfully and if they are going to be a "new country" station, then do it right. I remember Kicks 96 and how before Benchmark got its teeth into it, it was a new country station and it was different from WCOS.

WSSL has had trouble lately....they still do well but the ratings aren't near what they were a year or so ago. Again, still good, but below what they have done years past. WESC continues to rule.

You have it Gatekeeper. That is the mindset exactly. Quite simple.........
