Columbia Spring Trends

Wow, what happened to the hip-hop stations? Urban AC is doing great, while hip-hop WXBT and WHXT have continued to fall off. I think there is way too much Urban for this market. Maybe 100.1 should simulcast WVOC. Or how about WHXT go head to head with WNOK? Just my opinion. WLTY's numbers have been steady but not as good as they were. Overall, this was a more interesting book IMO. Thoughts?

Haven't delved into the story behind the scenes, yet.

Urban has been saturated for awhile, so other than WWDM, you are going to see everyone else ping-pong, depending on the programming, the current music product, and promotions.

I think the story is the country stations. Query whether expanding the WWNQ playlist into 1990's product hurt WWNU.

WLTY is unfocused. Successful Variety Hits stations have a focus and a point of view. The Jack (tm) stations that have done well have been focused on a particular niche in their market. "We play what we want" is a slogan, not the programming strategy.

Just kinda took at look at things with a cursory review.

WHXT is either too focused 18-34 or its not focused enough. I don't know the music, so I can't tell you anything more than that. XBT is strong in both younger and older demos. HXT would need to either steal the younger end away or broaden up and siphon 25-54's.

WWNQ is going to be the one putting the screws to WCOS. But it is going to do it very very slowly. WWNU is not focused enough. It needs to drill down and get heavy 18-34's. It will never win by being WCOS-2.

WNKT -- is -- sucking the oxygen out of the room for sports radio.

WXBT plays more R&B than they used to. They are a "Young" station ALL day but go straight up Urban AC at night with Keith Sweat. Speaking of that and I know Im going off subject of Columbia radio and this thread, but I noticed CC's Beat in Charlotte has a Sunday slow jam show from 6PM-10PM on Sundays! Yikes! And of course it is followed by the Dawson McCalister talk show. Talk about unfocused. Prime example.

I can tell you they are having major sample problems with the 18-24 demo, and all Urbans had a bad April. The Big DM had its worst month in probably two years. The reason you here more R&B on XBT, is because a mjority of the good product out right now is R&B.

I think it would be hard for WVOC to simulcast on HST, but maybe WXBT since they are both owned by Clear Channel, and think that WWNU sounds too much like WCOS and at the reat ethey are going maybe it is time for a format flip considering that WWNQ's numbers are up substantially because of them adding 90's music to their rotation.

Neil--

You are dead wrong about both Sunday Night Slow Jamz and Dawson McAlister. The SNSJ show is TOTALLY 18-34 focused, all down tempo R&B hits from the mid to late 90s, and occasionally they throw in a 80s R&B smash, but check it out at www.slowjams.com

Dawson McAlister consistently pulls down double digit shares in the 18-34 demo.

Well I stand corrected, sir. :)

Looks like WNKT has got some traction this trend as well with a 1.8... Maybe when I come back later this summer or in the fall I can see what the signal is like in Kershaw co and other places... As for NQ looks like the 90's adds paid off... When I was down south last year it was still mostly 70's and 80's... I know Haeold Miller tried HAC on 93.9, but how well do you guys think a good well programmed HAC station do in Columbia IE NU. Looks like the screw was put to Steve FM... Maybe it was to much Huey Lewis I dunno... That is my thoughts... CC1

LoL @ Huey Lewis. Well I think the problem is people have finally got tired of the same songs over and over. I think 96.7 should do classic hits or even a mainstream rock format.

I definitely think a classic hits format would work really well on 96.7 or for that matter a true classic rock format. You can say what you want, but Fox 102 is not a really good classic rocker.

You know, it's interesting that Steve did better when they had a more eclectic playlist. But now they are tired and predictable. When, oh when, will someone realize that it's the eclectic side of those stations that cause the station to work in the first place, not the researched songs ad nauseum. I am thinking of calling them and leaving this message for them:

"Oh Steve, what has happened to you? When we first started out, you were so fresh and exciting. But now you're tired and predictable. You're kind of like B-106 on a half can of Red Bull. I think we should see other people."

Guess, they won't use that one on the air.
I'm not saying do away with the researched songs altogether but geez.....

It sounds to me that STEVE-FM has gone from being a good unpredicatable station with interesting play list to the usual boring CC cookie cutter list.

I bet their playlist is pretty much just like every other Clear Channel VH Playlist... One station that came to mind is Louie FM in Louie Town... When they first started they were doing pretty decent in the ratings, but they have also settled down as well. CC1
