Columbia's Forthcoming Move-Ins: WEAF 1130, WNKT 107.5

With the FCC changing the rules to allow changes of city of license and station moves as "minor" moves no longer requiring the few AM "major changes" FCC windows or the FM two-step process of changing the FM table of allotments and then filing for the move, it looks like a lot of stations around the country have been filing to move in recent weeks.

Poking around some of the southern states...I see WEAF 1130 Camden has filed to move to Springdale.

More interesting...WNKT filed two weeks ago to move from the Charleston market (as the current 107.5C0 St George) into the Columbia market via a downgrade to 107.5C2 Eastover SC.

WNKT's FCC records: http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/fmq?call=WNKT
Proposed new coverage: http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM1168544.html

The new tower site is east of the current WTCB 106.7 one.

Since Columbia is just slightly smaller than Charleston, any one know why Citadel is moving it from their Charleston cluster to their Columbia one?

Citadel had one too many signals in Charleston and put one of their stations in a trust with the intent to sell once the ABC deal went through. Looks like they found a way to keep it in the family, should the FCC approve it.

Omg wow! I have been pondering this thought myself for a good while about 107.5 moving into Columbia! This is amazing news! The format I had always hoped for if 107.5 moved in was/is active rock as "X107-5". Columbia radio is getting very interesting again.

With all due respect Double O, that would be great as a listener, but with WARQ struggling, I can't imagine Citadel would try a young rocker with a new stick. But I hope you are right. It's Country now, so you have to figure they will switch it to something else.

I see your point bugz, but they could be a cross between ARQ and Fox, and try to reach the 25-49 demos. If that doesn't work, how about a full signal classic hits station? What I think may happen though is we will see a CHR or chURBAN to take on NOK.

Citadel's got some interesting possibilities. Charleston was way over-radioed.

My guesses: SuperTalk to take out WVOC for good after the addition of the Gamecocks from B106 or a Sports station to pick off one or both current stations or a CHR to protect B106. A wild card would be to do an urban format that compliments 98.5.

As for WEAF, it will still be operating at 9 watts. So not a big impact there. Seeing as it would be diplexed on the WTGH tower, I think you could say WQXL is not coming back.

Hey guys!!! Since 98.5 kiss FM does pretty good with what they have I could see Kiss 107.5 or for the matter since NOK is kinda going down the crapper ratings wise I could see a good CHR errrrrr Real CHR to give NOK a run for the money... After 11 hours of work I know that sounds crazee, but hey I am Crazee... CC1

Mr Dudefan;
Those are some interesting observations. I think talk would probably be a good choice for them although I'm not personally very excited about year another set of conservatives all saying basically the same thing that those on WISW and WVOC are saying. BTW, what do you know about WQXL? I know that they had a CP where the WTGH tower is. Believe it or not, in it's early days, the station was a pretty good Top 40 and some pretty good broadcasters graced their mics.

My WNKT guesses were based on what Citadel has done in other markets, the potential flanking moves, the current weakensses and strengths in the cluster and the fact that WNKT will still pretty much be stonger rimshot.

My guess would be that 107.5 goes some form of talk/sports to pick up all the Gamecock stuff scattered about the cluster and to pick up the WISW talk programs in an effort to bolster the USC programming. My bet would be that WISW would become an AM version of standards ex-WSCQ.

Supertalk 107.5 WISW-FM would have a nice ring to it.

RE: WQXL.

From what I heard through the engineering grapevine, the WQXL owner was still in negotiations for the rent on the WTGH tower. The guesstimate was that one a lease was executed, about 6 months of work would be required. If that is true, then there is a very good possibility that the CP would expire and 1470 would be deleted permanently.

Should be an interesting year, I assume all of this will be up by summer and 107.5 will be on? Also, will Cat Country be revived elsewhere in Charleston? Only other place I can think of on the Citadel stations is 96.9, but that's the only AC in the market.

Since I am using a new computer and my screen reader is not working correctly will WJMZ have to make any adjustments since NKT will be moving closer??? CC1

from the looks Carroll, WNKT will have a great null northwest of the city, just like WHXT 103.9. i could be wrong though. Going west on I-26, WHXT's signal begins to fade fast before you even enter newberry county.

Been there, done that. If they really wanted it, they would have kept it.

Is standards still on 1590 down there? If not, how does soft AC/standards Mix 106 sound?

While I don't know the decisionmaking, standards wasn't on 1320 very long. It seems to me as an outside observer that they went back to talk because there is more programming with a wider appeal and the only signal that Citadel had for that sort of programming was 1320. Bringing in 107.5 and putting talk/sports on FM woulc enable Citadel to consolidate all the USC programming on one station and also satisfy the University's rights agents' preference of being on an FM signal with USC football. That leaves 1320 with Gene McKay and the gang and nothing else to surround them. Standards/50's/60's pop would seem to be a good play and would be the sole station in the market serving that upper upper end. And before someone says 55+ audience are not worthwhile, you should take a look at your parents and the current crop of baby-boomers. There are a hell of a lot of folks 60+ that are still extremely healthy, active, and consuming!

....and the person who develops a sound marketing/sales strategy to tap into the demo that Madison Avenue no longer wants is going to be extremely successful (and wealthy!). Seems like there should be a way somehow to sell products (Oldies and Standards) to people who actually want them (Boomers and Seniors).

Is it a given that these move-ins will be approved by the FCC? What could prevent them?

In the case of 107.5, which group in Columbia should have the most to fear?

"In the case of 107.5, which group in Columbia should have the most to fear?"

None. It's Citadel. I mean, come on...you see how ably they handled the frequency in Charleston, right? And not just over a book or a year - for close to 10 years.

Unless and until there is a wholesale restructuring of management in South Carolina, Citadel shouldn't scare anyone.

My experience has been that almost everyone they hire to manage their properties (at least in SC) has been much more interested in making sure their job is secure than that their properties are performing. Which is funny, because, in most cases, if your properties are performing, your job is secure.
