Columbus May PPMs

Wow.  While Sunny climbed to 8.1 and third-place 6+, that eternal "me-too" major-under-utilization of a big signal, 93.3, sunk back to its usual area -- 3.6, which is well under half of Sunny.  Even more eye-opening is that 93.3 is now virtually neck-in-neck with Class A the Brew, and only .3 ahead of Class A Rewind, which took a healthy leap from 2.5 to 3.3.

Just imagine if Rewind had a signal like 93.3's!  At 2.4, Gen-X is now about where Rewind was last time, so there's hope -- especially if CC does the logical thing and moves it to 93.3.  Or the even more logical thing and changes 93.3 to CBS-FM type Classic Hits.  That would get them Sunny listeners (maybe even more than they're getting now), and also attract listening from those who are cuming Rewind and other fringes-of-CBS-FM-type-CH formats.

Nothing too surprising near the top of the ratings.  NCI, TVN & COL are all chugging along nicely to CC's credit.  But a few other items of note include Power's continued slide (5.4-4.6-4.3), and WWCD falling back to 2.3 from June's surprisingly inflated 3.6.

BTW, anyone know about when WNKO started encoding? Hard to judge how good their 1.2 is without knowing how many weeks they amassed listening credit.

Don't know why CC just doesn't put "Oldies" or "Classic Hits" on 93.3. The format is killing in many, many markets now since PPM went into effect. If they're not careful, they will cede this audience to WNKO and/or Rewind. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Surprised corporate hasn't dictated it. Their "Oldies" station in Portland just became #1 6+.

It will be interesting to see whether WNKO now gets serious about being a player. They've spent quite a bundle on the new transmitter, etc.

WNKO will be a player just like WCLT.. They will keep serving their local community however enjoy that nice share from Columbus. WCLT has always pulled a decent share (for being distant signal not serving Columbus) and it appears WNKO will also follow in that.

I'm told they started encoding in early May but the exact date in May isn't available.

They said in the paper they just care about their Newark/Licking county listeners so it appears they don't want to be a player in Columbus.

I think 93.3 to go to classic hits for sure. WJJK 104.5 in Indianapolis is a GREAT station, and their May ratings came in at 6.3. Been a top 4 station for the past few months.

Sunny 95's rise might be caused by them having local talent at night now instead of Delilah. Mix 107.9's ratings slowly improve but I think the would improve more if they dropped Billy Bush. The wide variety on Rewind keeps them rising and doing better than GenX 106.7. Since everyone wants 93.3 to go classic hits don't you think we have enough stations playing 70's and 80's music already? I think Columbus radio plays too much old stuff and not much new stuff. It would be nice to even the competition field on music again. Sunny 95 would be #1 if 93.3 wasn't playing the same music. WCOL would probably have a double digit rating as a stand alone country station if three other stations didn't play it. I anything the owners need to quit making their stations sound alike. GenX 106.7 should play more pop flavored generation X music and leave a majority of the grunge and hairband music to The Brew. One of the country rimshots should go after WNCI's audience since most cities are starting to get more than 1 CHR station. 107.1 would not have the first adjacent channel interference like it did in 1993 when it played CHR. Better yet Wilks could move classic country from 95.5 to 107.1 and put CHR on 95.5. But I don't think Wilks would want to shock Columbus by switching a station that has been country since 1959 to CHR. If 93.3 went classic hits WTDA or even WNKO would either go CHR, pick up the AC format 93.3 abandons or switch to a format we definitely don't need another country music station. I remember all that talk as 102.5 was giving us a fifth country channel.

No question WJJK is doing great, but at this point it's really a classic rock station.  It tends to be hit-rock oriented like the Brew, but with music from the 60's to the 80's.

Radio-Info isn't always terribly accurate with the format designations.  They still call WNCI hot AC (?) and the Brew 90's (??).
