Columbus OH weather coverage.

Columbus OH weather coverage.

Apparently tonight WTVN was simulcasting WBNS Channel 10 for a bit ... I was listening to WNCI earlier in the evening and "local" Nate Tyler was on in place of "Billy The Kid" and was mentioning the storms and mentioned "late tonight" if severe weather hit they would simulcast NBC4's TV Coverage.

Vince Tornado & West Side Jeff were live and local at 10:30 PM on WTVN-FM. Matt Bruning was also in studio (but he didn't do the bottom of the hour news since it is outsourced).

WNCI-FM and WODC-FM are both simulcasting WCMH-TV right now (2:18 AM).

WTVN-AM is simulcasting WBNS-TV audio.

WMNI-FM was simulcasting WSYX-TV a few minutes ago and is no longer simulcasting.

Yep - I heard the flip of Oldies 93.3 back to normal programming (sounded like someone just punched a switch on a router panel - dumped back into the Classic Hits mid song).

Rest of the dial seemed to be "radio as normal" I did notice a recorded thunderstorm warning announcement on "X 106.7"

Off Air: 103.1 WVKO-FM (static - They have a rural transmitter site anyways). and 102.1 LPFM was broadcasting "dead air" after 3am.

Speaking of WNKO, has anyone noticed that they sound "different" lately? They sound better to my old ears. I wish that I had and HD radio to see if maybe they went digital.

Although I didn't hear it, someone told me that WNKO did a pretty good job of covering the weather last night.

I wish I would have heard it. Usually, they are very obviously voicetracked after about 7. What were they doing last night?

As I said, I didn't hear it myself, but my friend said that they had a news person in the studio doing frequent weather reports and updates.

Whenever I've heard WNKO during storms, their EAS seems to go off quite frequently. I've noticed that on WMNI too.

Thanks for posting this thread!

Heard Chief Weatherman Jym Ganahl say about 2:00 AM that they are now partnering with WNCI
and Oldies 93.3 during severe weather. I heard the flip of WNCI back to normal programming, sounded like what you said above about Oldies 93.3.

Jym Ganahl of WCMH-TV also said this is the longest period time they had continuously stayed on the air with severe weather coverage in the 30 years he had been at the station. They said they
had been on since 5:00 PM and it appears they stayed on until about 3:30AM or longer. Colleen, the news anchor said they had been on so long they were starting to loose track of time.

Is WVKO-FM still off the air? They are always the first station to go off the air and the last to get
back on during bad weather. At least WVKO-AM was spared this time around!! The last two major
storms, WVKO-AM had been off for days on end.

It appears this whole storm was overblown by the Columbus media this time around. Maybe
because little waring was given about the very destructive derecho last June of 2012 stations wanted to error on the side of caution? A derecho was all but guaranteed this time around
for about 60 hours before the storm struck Columbus but did not materialize. In 2012, that derecho was not predicted but a couple or three hours ahead of time at the most.

More here on the storm:

Right now, yes... Having more to do with the tree that fell and took out the feed to the transmitter. The Tree people should have it cleared in a little bit, and AEP says it's a minor repair, so hopefully back tonight. Unfortunately the only thing affected is the transmitter, so it's priority may have been delayed a bit

It was interesting to see how Clear Channel handled this storm.. I guess with the downsizing of the WTVN News room a few years ago they must now rely on the local TV media for longform coverage. (though TVN did have someone local in the studio prior to midnight).

It was interesting hearing NBC4 on WNCI -- I listened partly in car and then some on iHeart (my only complaint is that in the evening they had pushed people listening to them via iheart if they could not be near a radio but they left the automation running the normal music/ad playlist (despite in Simulcast mode with NBC4) so every time an ad break hit on the automation iHeart dumped out of the local station and played 3-7 mins of "iHeart New Music/ Promo filler" (like I said I am guessing someone changed the programming "source" going to the STL the "Router" they use in the studios instead of actually physically going in the room and pushing up a fader.. thus why the automation was left running (to interrupt the iheart feed with alternative content).

I watched ABC6's coverage most of the evening online as I was remote away from a television and I was kind of surprised that both WBNS (watched their coverage for a period of time) and ABC6 also primary did non stop coverage.. As the storm got closer it started to get more organized and started to have a 'hook' to it which meant that it was "The perfect storm" for causing a Der-echo -- and if not that plenty of thunderstorms capable of producing tornado... (One of the meteorologists on tv actually at one point was like 'I am so surprised this has not caused more tornado because everything is perfect for such occurrence")

I am guessing that because of the caught off guard by the previous storm in June of 2012.. plus the recent severe weather in Moore OK that killed many.. that we're going to see more "over hype" of the storms in the side of being better safe than sorry..

Bummer on WVKO-FM being off air due to the power issue -- that site is fairly remote as transmitter sites in this area goes and always seems to go dark in severe weather. (I am guessing Bernard would rather give the La Mega folks a break in their LMA bill for the month then invest in a generator to keep the site up in a extended power outage).

Did not see any other issues in a scan of the Columbus radio dial that night (even the AFR stations which sometimes go dark were on)... My guess is if we had actually seen 80-90 mph winds the story would have been different...

WBNS went to regular programming (The Late Show) from about midnight to 12:37 AM (when the Late Late Show begins) when they jumped right back into storm coverage.

Dunno, but getting fuel to it would be a PIA... Blown up STL receiver not fixed, AEP did do a good job getting the power back on...life goes on
