Columbus Radio Changes

Power 1075 adds Katy Perry's E.T. - they haven't been on that risky of a record since they were #1 in the city as Rhythmic CHR years ago... part of me thinks they added it because WDHT in Dayton did... and it's #1 in the country.

(Check out the original post.) Mix 1079 is getting more risky as Adult CHR - they've added Rihanna's S&M and has playing Tonight with Ludacris in it and also adding songs such as E.T. pretty quickly. Also, one-two 80s songs a day - very nice!

Rewind has become more AC-leaning which is surprising with Sunny being in the same building. Rewind has added songs such as Alanis Morisette and Matchbox 20 and are now using Cincy's slogan "Feel Good Favorites from the 80s and More!" - Sunny has also skewed a little more current lately as well.

Any predictions?

Mine: Power remains Urban and we just got lucky with Katy.
Mix continues to get more risky and will add more CHR tracks
Rewind will start to sound a little more like Cincy's Rewind.

Kudos to Saga for trying new things!

This seems like an evolution that's been going on there for awhile. I know they've been using "Feel Good Favorites from the 80's and More!" for a month or more now, although I still hear "Columbus' Greatest Hits" occasionally. And while still playing as far back as the 70s, they are now at about one-to-two 90's an hour, even late-90's as in the examples you gave. IMO if anything makes it seem more AC than before it's the era broadening more than anything else. The tempo seems about the same as before (maybe even more uptempo and sometimes edgy), although in addition to expanding era-wise they've freshened the music across all of the eras.

In short, Rewind sounds better than ever.

Definitely agree. Wish they had some big signals other than Sunny. They certainly do in their other similar-sized markets, but hey, this is Columbus :(.

This was a similar situation when Mix was making the transition from '80s, '90s, Now to Today's Best Mix. You'd still hear occasional '80s, '90s, Now sweepers but also hear newer "today's best mix" ones until they were able to get enough to drop the old ones... Columbus' Greatest Hits doesn't sound right coming out of Green Day like this morning. :D

I agree that Rewind sounds better than ever lately. I find myself listening to Rewind more and more. GenX not so much. 106.7 is lame.

Whoever is programing 106.7 doesn't have a clue. You would think the program director was from Pakistan. They took a great concept and butchered it. I just don't get it.

I have been listening to Gen-X Radio 106.7 and during the "commercial breaks" that they announce come up, there is no commercials, it's just their callsign then he comes back on saying we're back to the music. No advertisers? I know it is latenight but it still can't be a good sign about how the station is doing, can it?

That's not uncommon overnights even on WCOL... Some of the breaks they just go back into music instead of PSAs or whatever.. Overnights has always been a throw away time advertising wise.. Usually very few spots during that 12a-5a period. The stations that do have spots at that time are usually the "club" or "chat line" ads you hear on stations like The Blitz from time to time.

WCOL runs After Midnite, along with 94.3 WMRN Marion, 101.3 WNCO Mansfield, and 102.1 WIMT Lima, which are all listenable from my house. I viewed the "time slots" from that program a few years ago, and they run commercials for After Midnite (mandatory, obviously) in certain spots, and then each station gets a chance to run "local" commercials during other time slots. WIMT is the only one (from the stations I can pick up) that uses those local time slots. Otherwise, After Midnite will play a song that's around 3:30, and is usually older or not heard much anymore, in case a commercial isn't played. Many times on WIMT, when the commercials are over and they're about to go back on air, you will catch the TAIL end of the song that After Midnite played.

I like to listen to WFXN 102.3 out of Galion especially at night, due to the fact that they will end a song, do a station ID like they're going into a commercial, but instead do a quick weather report, then it's right back to the music. Makes it nice when you're having a party or working 2nd/3rd shift.

Gen X has lately felt more like a modern rock station to me. They played such a long run of alternative music earlier, I thought I was listening to the old format.
It went U2, Linkin Park, Beastie Boys, Blind Melon, Green Day, Maroon 5, and Pearl Jam before Aerosmith came on to signal this wasn't a modern rocker. I guess Maroon 5 is more top40/Hot AC but I think they've listed alternative in the past. They've also added a lot of the 2000s modern rock recurrents lately too: The Fray, The Killers, Modest Mouse, Jet, All American Rejects, Jimmy Eat World.

Part of me thinks they could evolve the Gen X format into a contemporary, AAA/Alt/Hot-AC hybrid like Frequency in Cinci. With NCI leaning more rhythmic, Mix following suit, and Rewind hitting the 90s, a change like that could give the station playlist some freshening up while having Mix think twice about leaning too far into dance music land.

Granted, I'm just reading into it as I'm a AAA fan. :)

Yes, Katy Perry's "E.T." is number one on BDS' Rhythmic Top 40 chart, so this is nothing new for WCKX, who happens to report to the BDS Rhythmic panel. The Rhythmic chart is becoming more like a Top 40/CHR chart, so expect Power 107.5 to adapt.

Sounds like they're evolving into a Modern AC station, similar to Click 101.5/WCLI-FM in Dayton. 106.7 would be smart to go in that direction.
