They are asking for a long term lease on the land. Will tOSU even want to sell the land they own
to CC? If so, will CC want to pay the asking price? The daytime site is on tOSU owned golf course?


That seems to be a compelling reason for CC to purchase the station, especially if they plan on keeping WTVN of AM for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, like Ohio Media Watch says, he doesn't think it will wind up in the hands of CC. They must have some even better reasons why
CC won't be interested.
 
I'm not sure I ever said that it wouldn't end up in the hands of CC, though I could well have said that somewhere.

I just expressed a pessimistic view, in general, of tOSU being able to unload 820 short of a fire sale, which they do not need to do...it can keep pumping out the NPR News format until such time as they finally find a new owner for it.
 
One side note: Ohio does have an $8 billion budget hole to plug, and Gov. Kasich could be coming by with a scalpel.

That said, I am assuming tOSU is insulated from much of it, and WOSU as well, due to its own financial situation probably being very good.

wasn't WBNS AM's programming already on the 97.1 HD-2 I thought I remember it there during the HOTAC days.

Don't know, and my HD Radio is nowhere near the market right now :D

It was there during the Mix 97.1 Days. When they dump Mix 97.1 and moved The Fan to FM they Dumped the HD2 signal as well.


Recently, when they brought back HD2 to air ESPNEWS there.

Currently it's, 97.1 The Fan (WBNS-FM) on HD1, 1460 ESPN Columbus (WBNS-AM) on HD2 and ESPNEWS and other ESPN Radio stuff (WBNS-HD) on HD3.

Personal opinion here, If a station has more then 1 HD station The sound quality goes to hell on it. That what have noticed when have been listening on my little HD Radio.

And yes I'm the only person in Columbus to have a HD radio. ::) ;D

Are they now separately branding 1460 as "ESPN Columbus"? Someone asked me about that.

How much separate programming is there on the AM? I seem to recall they carry some midday ESPN stuff (Colin Cowherd?) that the FM doesn't, and also some Westwood One PBP.

OK, just checked the station's schedule, and I'm basically right, except it's Scott Van Pelt on 1460 only:

IIRC, they were using the tag line "The Fan on AM" for different programming at one point.

How they are doing with 1460 now is they are carrying the whole ESPN Radio with the addition of the The Other OSU sports (Women's B-Ball, Hockey and Baseball) the NFL games, Indians Baseball and Cavs Basketball.

They will still simulcast OSU Men's basketball and Football but outside of that their main focus is 97.1 The Fan WBNS-FM. On air it's branded as "1460 ESPN" also this is where they tell them to listen to events on there AM side.

I presume you're trying to say that 1460 is now carrying ESPN Radio off the bird? From what I had seen beforehand, Scott Van Pelt was airing on 1460 in place of "The Big Show." So they are now clearing Doug Gottlieb's ESPN afternoon-drive show?

Simulcasting all Ohio State football and basketball games is an automatic deal; in fact, I presume that's what the flagship agreement calls for, to have both 97.1 and 1460 as flagships, no matter what.

I hope that would enable 97.1 to go more local during the weekdays. (Heck, move "The Big Show" to a 10a-2p slot, and give Common Man and The Torg a 2p start.) Mike and Mike have a clearance deal within ESPN Radio itself, so they will probably still be simulcast no matter what.
 
That is exactly what I'm say. They are running Doug Gottlieb's Afternoon Show in full on 1460 AM with the FULL ESPN Radio schedule and the "2nd tier sports" as well.

I do agree with you, Nathan. I hope this leads to more local programming on 97.1. They are trying to push out more programming on the local end recently.
