Columbus Radio

Ok...you've drawn me out with the jabs and barbs. I'll bite and respond, but I'll use my name unlike most on here including mobiledjin.(although I'll let you know who that is in this thread)I think it was One who noted that no management team is perfect, radio or not. Definitely true. It's so funny how employees ALWAYS think they know more and know better than their supervisors. I'll admit, I'm guilty of this too. We all are. But management isn't easy and that's probably why so many people I hire say "I have no desire to be a PD." Yet, they'll run around behind your back and bitch and moan and complain about how horrible of a PD you are. John Foster always says "I don't have a problem with complaining, but do it to the right person." Rather than belly-aching to all the other staff and creating a negative force in the building, share your thoughts with your supervisor who can actually DO something about the situation. Qmix #1?? As we all know, Maximiser is such an awesome little tool. We can all be number one in something. Q may have eged out WKKG in share in certain demos, but when it comes to delivering numbers of listeners to advertising clients there's no comparison. I guess we're not supposed to quote numbers on here, so I'll do my best to be nice: WKKG cumes over 1xx,xxx. Y106 about two-thirds of that(The most listeners the WWWY call letters have ever had by the way). Qmix is under one-third of WKKG's cume audience. I think many forget that Qmix chooses to be a Columbus only radio station, and so their efforts are strictly focused on Bartholomew County. WKKG and Y106 speak to about 20 counties each, and regularly serve 6 or 8. The only person on here that seems to have a real beef with WRB is mobiledjin and I'm sure you all know why. A sad situation really...another sour grapes employee who wants to blame everyone else for his mistakes. It amazes me how people go through life that way. Mobile, you can try all you want to act like you're out of town now and your "folks" still live here, blah, blah, blah. For someone that spent as much time on the computer at work, especially using corporate email for personal use(don't you know that stuff is the property of the company or did you not read your handbook? Oh, another thing that must be somebody else's fault), I'm really surprised you couldn't come up with a better username. Because, alot of the things you're saying on here, sound just like the things Joe Kelly used to run around the building saying behind my back to everyone else. Joe...er, uh...adj..uh...mobiledjin keeps saying that I'm so scared of any type of threat to my job that I fire any and all who pose one. No, actually what scared me was a morning guy who wrote a letter to my supervisor making many false accusations about my character and stating that I actually tried to poison him! That was just one of the instances where he tried to get me fired. Talk about job insecurity. And to say that me and the rest of the management team at WRB only care about ourselves is ludacris. Mobile, you always had some family situation that needed attending to, and I pretty much let you come and go as you pleased. But again, for people that always want to blame others for their mistakes, I expect nothing less than a comment like the one you made.Yes, there's a lot of drama in the WRB building...and I'm sure in the Reising building...and every other radio station in America. Didn't you ever read "The PD Chronicles?" We all were so hooked and amused by those accounts BECAUSE WE'VE ALL BEEN THERE! Radio people are nuts! That's the bottom line. And yes, alot of great radio people have come and gone here, most on their own accord to other ventures. Everybody, including listeners, always automatically assume that we've fired them all. All of the recent firings had merit, but only those involved know the real stories. I'll quote two more things here from John Foster, then I'll wrap it up for now..."A hundred years from now, none of this will even matter." And..."It's beats a real job." Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the BS that we forget that we have the coolest job in the world that everybody else would love to do. P.S. Mobile, I chose this username for you.Scott MichaelsWKKG/Y106 Program Director

Seconded. Easily my favorite book of all time. And even during my short tenure in the Reising building, I saw my share of drama. But as long as you're not personally involved, that's half the fun of the job!

Wow.....what a fun thread.Has WKKG kept the tradition alive of having an over zealous sales rep break into a fit of push ups when he makes a big sale? ::)Also....isn't Paul Kenney the former Jammin John Trout? :)

Hey Scatzerfan! Did you hire me in Bloomington? If not, does anyone know whatever happened to Jim S. ?Paul Kenny and Jammin' John Trout are one and the same! He's programming a Top 40 in Youngstown,OH. Good to hear from Scott Michaels! Tell Tasha and Gordon I said hello!

Well Looky here: We have a mean one protecting his job or kissing up. The Columbus Market has gotten weak in the last few years. They have gotten lazy at doing the smallest of things. What ever happen to promoting yourself and your radio station, getting out for the fun of it. That is what radio is about! When you voice track and go home early, it turns into just a job. That is what I see all over the Columbus radio market. DJs getting fat! White River doesn't let any PD program anything. They are told what to do, period! Same way at other stations in the market. What the heck do you think consultants are paid for! The market is ripe for a takeover if anyone ever had the guts to come in and do it the way it was meant to be. No one gets out anymore to have fun. I wish I could grow fat sitting behind a computer and voice tracking. I'd most likely be a lazt DJ as well! And when someone says that former WRB staffers can't cut it, he may want ot check twice, but if that's the best you can do on the afternoon show, go home and let a high school student come in and board op! You need to get up and become the PD you dream you are and become it! Seems like if anyone can't cut it, maybe they should ask a Boston station who cutys it and who can't. Because you sure ain't! Go home little boy and let the real people DJ or better yet annouce! DJ GOD!

Make no mistake.....I am not "The Scatzer"......just a fan! Someone that used to be around back in the day. And actually, I don't know where he is these days.remember......."You've gotta listen to WINN!"

Wow, go out of town to dj a couple of gigs and look what happens. First off Scott Michaels, I am not Joe Kelly, but I do know him. We worked in Albany, GA. at the same time and worked together in Huntsville, AL.I will tell you that in both places, he was very well respected both on and off the air. He took time with me to help me improve my on air work and production. I ran into him at the Holiday Inn in Columbus about 2 years ago as we were djing wedding receptions there. He got me caught up in some of the changes in radio as I got out of the biz about 4 years ago. He and I had conversations about the atmosphere there at WRB, so that might be why some of my posts sounded like him because of some of the things he told me about that place. If only part of what he told me was true, wow what a trippy place to work. And Yes, Mr Michaels, my parents do live in Columbus. I live in New Point and run a dj business and also do desktop publishing and CAD work from my house. Sometimes what you think you know, you don't know at all.

Columbus radio is definitely a trip - but it was a fun trip! At one point I was doing mornings at 1010 WCSI, a couple of shifts on 101.5 WKKG and weekend news on both stations. I was at WRB for only about 6 months, when I got booted over a misunderstanding. Those happen alot in radio we know. I was also working under Scatzer at WINN 106. The most trippy thing during my career was do a live legal ID during the Indy 500 "you're listening to the greatest spectacle in racing on AM 1460 WKRP North Vernon". Saying those call letters - legally on air - amazing isn't it?Allan HackneyMornings News/Talk 1340 WBIW Bedford

Can you get fired if you don't run news or newscasts supporting the right Sheriff's candidate?

Absolutely not...but it makes for a nice scapegoat. The person in question with that statement could be the subject of an entire "PD Chronicles Book."

Sorry mobile, I have a hard time believing that you just happen to "work with" Joe Kelly in Albany and Huntsville and then just happen to run into him here in Columbus. But if indeed you are who you say, not sure why in the world you'd have such a [*****] to slam the WRB stations without knowing anything about us other than what you've been brainwashed with by mr. kelly. I guess after stopping and thinking about it, that would make sense. He did the same thing here...constantly ran around to everyone that would listen and injected them full of his negativity. He was a BIG part of the reason the atmosphere was so "trippy" here. DJ god...when you learn to string together a complete coherent sentence, then you can come back to this board. I don't think you'll have to worry about getting fat behind a computer at ANY radio station anytime soon if your speaking skills are anything like your typing and grammar.[EDIT*=name calling]

Really interesting is that with all the stations in Indiana those in Columbus seem to be getting the most posts. How about Mitzi and Bruce at WPUM. Went to school with Mitzi. Glad to see her living her dream.Esoteric programming yes. Not my bag of tea all the time but there are fans of the format and it isn't the same format any 17 year old can duplicate.Congrats!

Didn't Mitzi used to be on WWWY spinning Joni Mitchell, Sly & The Family Stone & ELO tunes back in the mid 90's?

Well Mr. Michaels, whether you believe it or not I do not really care. Radio is a very small business and people do run into other people they have been in the biz with in alot of places. Indiana just happened to be the place this time. I have also spoken to other people that have worked there and alot of them have said what I have said here. So it is not just one person saying these things. But I guess I should change some of the people I have associated with according to you before I get accused of doing something that I did not do. But it does sound, from your post that you almost enjoyed firing him and getting him out of the building. Well hopefully your life is better.

Whatever happened to the WINN/WKRP(WNVI) building in the south suburbs of Scipio? Does WRB use it for anything? It used to be offices & studios. Is it just storage & a transmitter now?"WINN-106 W-I-N-N....North Vernon....Seymour.......Columbus!"

It was great to hear on Q-Mix that Jeremiah Harriman is coming back to the airwaves on Monday. I worked with him at WRB... cool cat!

Does anyone know what happened to the old WINN-106 (pre WRB) lineup?

Peach & Geno?
Scatzer?
Katrina?
Devin Marsh?
Chuckie B?

Dave Peach is now GM at WREL/WWWZ in Lexington, VA. www.wrel.com
Jim Scatzer last I heard was out of radio but still living and working in Columbus (at least he was when I was at QMix 5 years ago).
Chuckie B at one point was at WDJX in Louisville, but that was some time ago.
