Columbus Radio

Chuckie B is, indeed, down at WDJX, doing overnights, in Louisville. He has been at the gig for quite some time and enjoying it, as has always been the case for Chuckie B, one of the hardest working DJs in the biz. His friend, Katrina, at last I spoke with Chuck, was still in the business, in or around Louisville, as well.

Hey Gang...

Pretty cool posts on the Ol' WINN 106. As for me Chucky B. I am still working at WDJX Louisville "Overnights 12-5am, and a part time remote Tech setting up remotes for all 5 of our stations. I still miss the Ol' WINN days. :-\ Peach I cant remember what station he's at now. Geno.. well he's in Indianapolis last time I checked working at a law firm. Scatzer the former PD is working in Columbus, Indiana still. Some down town Goverment office I think. I saw him awhile back :). Katrina "Kat" was working at 102.3 WXMA The Max in Louisville Radio One. She was Late After noons and the former Music Director. I say former because she recently accepted a new position doing sales at a station in Fort Wayne. We had a going away party for her awhile back. Not to sure where Devin Marsh is now. I have'ntr seen or talked to him in years. Thats the latest that I know of for the old staff placement. Take Care all. I'll post more later. 8)

So I'm reading the board and see the pissing and moaning about WRB, what a crock from all those who don't know how it really is, or in my case really was. Scott Michaels, props to you for not taking crap from anyone. I put in nearly three and a half years there, on air and management. The statement about any PD there not being able to program the station is pure bull! From day one I was given the opportunity to not only solicit ideas, but follow through and execute them. My philosophies may have been different from what WRB may have experienced before, but they were very willing to listen. Regarding family issues and WRB, they were more than accomodating to me. I would have still been there today if I didn't have to move back east to care for a family member. Management understood 100 %, and didn't give me any grief. Lastly, John Foster knows what's going down there. I have nothing but admiration for him, and his advice helped me fine tune what I needed to do with my career. Columbus is.....Columbus, get over it! You either enjoy working there or get the hell out! Because of how they treated me, I'll always fall in the bunker for them.

My favorite WRB moment was when they bought WINN, WKRP & WRBI from ARS. Part of the deal on the Tuesday of the takeover was that ARS had to let several people go on the WINN staff.

Surprise surprise....everybody let go with the exception of one employee had previously left WRB to go to WINN.

I'm sure that was coincidence. ::)

(The only highlight of that day....was that they brought in the world famous Scatzer to run the board one more time in Scipio.)

I've been reading this thread with interest because I work for an ad agency (in Carmel/Noblesville) who frequently buy Columbus stations for our clients.
In spite of what was posted earlier, in the Fall Arbitron (2005) Q-Mix ran away with nearly ever demo, including 12+ males and females, and tons of other desirable demographics. If any White River Broadcasting stations managed to win ANY desirable demos, I don't know what they were and I have Maximizer/Tapscan in front of me.
In the more recent county-by-county, looks like Q-Mix put a whooping on every else again, and I believe this is the first ever County by County book in which WZRQ has dominated.
I'm not saying that WKKG's glory days are over, but it looks like WRZQ/Q-mix has hit a good combination of music and a great morning show with a high profile in Dawn Daugherty (who could easily be pullin' down six figures in nearly any market). But the real unsung hero of the cluster is Jimbo On The Radio.
He sounds as good as any talent in the state, and as an engineer has those stations sounding sweet and very reliable. The streaming audio is among the best in the business, they stream 64kbps stereo for all 3 of their stations. I know much of Jimbo's shift is pre-recorded, but it never sounds canned. He sounds live every time I turn it on and usually listen all the way home, because I love the 80's retro show at 5PM. He sounds like he genuinely loves the music, loves being on the radio and is jammin' right along with all of us. I only wish he talked a little more.
WKKG may return to the top in Bartholomew County, but it's going to take some work. Skipping the local fair was not the right step.
Then again, perhaps they just concede Columbus to WZRQ/Q-Mix and continue their strong pull in Jennings, Jackson, Johnson and Monroe... forgetting, also: Brown County, who seems to be hooked on KORN and Q-Mix.
Jimbo On The Radio Rulez, Dawn Daugherty is the Goddess of Columbus radio, who will be gone to bigger and better things within 6 more months.
They new mid-day girl sounds awful young on the air. She must be an intern as she sounds like she's only 16 or 17.

Finally: PTWORM was right, Dave Peach is GM at WREl-AM and 3WZ in Lexington Virginia. Pictures here: www.wrel.com
I had lunch wiht Jim Skater a few weeks ago. He is out of radio (wishin' he was back in the biz making a huge salary). He is the Community Development Program Manager, and reports directly to the mayor of Columbus. Gene Wheeler (of Peach & Geno in the Morning on WINN) is now a lawyer in Indianapolis. Chuckie B is still doing overnights at WDJX on the great shores of the Ohio River in Louisville.
Paul Kenny remains PD at WHOT in Youngstown, in spite of rumors to the contrary (several post over the past few years have stated "Paul Kenny has left the building at WHOT"
The lovely Katrina has departed Radio One Louisville for greener pastures in the Summit City (Ft. Wayne). I don't remember the cluster, probably Federated Media.
Columbus Indiana (the city) is populated with about 60,000 people, the county is close to 100,000, and you can add in another 20,000 from northern Jackson, Southern Johnson and pretty much all of Brown County.
Did I say Jimbo Rulez? Not only is he a great air personality and a great engineer and Information Technology person, he is truly one of the nicest guys I have ever met in Radio in my past 40 years. I originally met him in 1974 in Central Florida when he was doing afternoons at WCKS 101.1 FM(now WJRR in Orlando). Never heard him say a bad word about anyone, except Jimmie Carter:)
I remain a fan of Jimbo-On-The-Radio

WINN 106. Those were fun times. I was overnight talent before Kat got the full time gig when I got booted out. There was confusion, but no hard feelings. I am glad that Peach is doing well it seems, and Chuckie B. sounds great on DJX. I liked working in the thriving metro of Scipio, and remember our cats AM and FM that patrolled the halls looking for mice. I also remember when one of them got trapped in a roll of carpeting and died. I remember playing Garth Brooks and Kiss' Hard Luck Woman, and getting to say it was from the cd "Kiss My Ass". I also remember doing a live legal ID during the Indy 500 on the AM. "You're listening to the greatest spectacle in racing on 1460 WKRP North Vernon." I also remember the day Pinkard & Bowden came on with Peach & Geno in the morning. Nice memories of those days, before I went to Susquehanna and 104.5 The Bear. That was an experience as well.

I was driving south thru Bartholomew County this morning and I heard a very familiar voice on very unfamiliar territory. It was Big Mike Patrick the former morning guy at WKKG on Korn Country.
It sounds like he is going to for Korn. Does anyone know the story?

I also hear that Jimmy Foxx is out at Y-106. His "on the beach" profile was featured on Allaccess. I don't personally know Big Mike, bu his posts on this board indicate he enjoyed his time in Columbus at WKKG.

Enjoy it I did. I was asked to contribute a couple liners here and there. No harm, no foul. Trust me, my voice on a couple liners ain't gonna shake things up.

I enjoyed Jimmy Foxx's work when he was with the Philadelphia A's back in the 30's.

There was a guy named John Michael that worked weekends at WINN-106 in the mid 90's.......is that the same person we now know as JMV?

Hey, fellas...

Yes, JMV is John Michael from the old WINN 106 days. He also worked for AMP, at B97 (in Bloomington), both as an on-air talent and in sales, in the '90s.
