Columbus - Starkville

There are loads of people who could tell you how great the Golden Triangle was 30 + years ago; the talent that went forth to make their mark on the industry near and far; the friendships which began, sometimes as rivalries, but endure through the decades; how what happened in the basement at 201 Lampkin STAYED in the basement at 201 Lampkin. However, most of us haven't been within reception range of that area in a while. Any resident West Pointers or Sturg-eons want to weigh in?

Uh,were we supposed to burn the tapes and pictures from the dungeon,Rob? My bad.

Doesn't Cumulus and Urban own most of the stations in the GT,still?

Sylvester Croom has a better chance of playing football on New Year's Day than the likelyhood of anyone making any money in radio in GTR.

Can anyone share anything about this market... Please? Columbus - Starkville.

Well they've got a Supertalk affiliate and Sunny 93 did a live charity "stunt remote" (I didn't know anyone did those anymore, anywhere!) last week or two ago.

91.1 plays some good music from time to time, being the college station of the area.

Other than that, it's more or less all corporate drivel. Just like any other cookie cutter market these days.

Just from a little bit of experience in the market I would say that there is no more than 1.5-2 million radio dollars in the market. There are no less than a dozen signals trying to claim a piece of the pie. Cumulus probably does about 1.1 million, Urban might do 800k... and scraps to the others. Add to this, none (and this is a generalization) of the operators invest any money in the product, people, or promotion... so the likelyhood of growing the advertising pie is slim.

I would personally love to be back in this market under the right circumstances. If we can get CBC to leave the mountains and return to the GTR, I'll be right there to follow behind.

Even in "the good ole days" Starkville/ Columbus was a tough market. I am not sure if anyone really made a significant sustained profit there. The only real money was made when Cumulus came in and wrote the big checks to get everyone the hell out. BTW, thanks Lew.

Idle question: do any non-Telesouth stations in Columbus or Starkburg still carry MSU sports? If it is just Telesouth (WKBB), I suspect they pull a few bucks out of the market.

few is a relative term. the appropriate word may be "more". as in they are pulling in more dollars with it than before without it. and since you obviously haven't done a term in the gtr before, the proper name is starkvegas.

Telesouth's contract ,through this year, is for MSU football and basketball, and would only be on the one station in the market,I assume. Not as much dollars locally there as you might think for the old Bulldogs. As for Dr. Tech there, when he was in town we just had Starkv'l,as Skinny Johnny would say at WSSO, or StarkVILLE, as Glen James would say at KOR.
The vegas part musta come up when KOR went Country on FM when those Charismatic folks took over.

MSU has been on the French Camp station for years... I would guess they carry it on WKBB as well?

Since I don't follow their format, I often neglect the French Camp station. Man, that thing's a blowtorch!

I've heard up to the Tuscaloosa County line in AL, and in places like New Albany, Cleveland and Jackson. They might have better coverage almost as good as Sunny.

French Camp? Did they annex Columbus/Starkville/West Point? How about Louisville? Arbitron gerry-mandering made Tupelo/Columbus a market. Is there a Golden Trapezoid now?

Now you can see how hard it is to make money in that part of the state. Where's your market?

MSU sports has been on the French Camp station for many years. WFCA took all the MSU sports the university wanted to get on the air. They took it when no one else would. The Athletic Department people who know say that MSU sports will stay there. However.... now that Templeton is gone from the AD this issue will probably come up again. You've got to know Telesouth would like to have just one outlet in the area... their own station. Makes sense.
