Comcast Connecticut move WNET to digital tier

As of now WNET move from cable ch13 to the digital tier.now wtf was this move for.it seams like we are getting screwed over and over again.they keep jacking up the rates for less channels.there is no control over this corruption in the cable industry.

The following is what I've been told by others and may not be 100% accurate, but I feel I've got the gist of it correct.

It was a national agreement the cable companies made with the local PBS stations to get their subchannels carried. The cable company agreed to choose one PBS station as the local "primary" PBS which would get both analog and digital carriage. Any other PBS stations carried would be considered "secondary." Those would get either analog carriage only, or carriage of their digital signal along with subchannels.

WNET clearly chose the latter.

Well, Comcast in the Boston area just recently added the HD channel of WSBE, and their new subchannel. I guess that's why they're doing away with the analog one. My only problem is, I live in Natick, and I still haven't received the digital channels. I wonder what's going on.

...AND they've killed off Fox 5 altogether here in New Haven.

I hate to beat a dead horse because I've said it a million times here, but if you want to see a good cable franchise ruined, call in Comcast. People can criticize Tele-Media/Adelphia all they want, but they were invested in the community, covered local elections, local high school sports, public affairs, did a weekly news brief, etc. After their bankruptcy a few years ago, Comcast came in and cut it all! Like the other guy said, they've been stripping stations from our lineup left and right since they came in here, but have yet to drop any prices.

Then I saw the letter they put out to the Waterbury/Naugatuck Valley franchises last week when I was at some friends' house. On April 22nd, they're adding 3 substations of WNET-13 to the digital lineup, but getting rid of WNYW-5 on both analog and digital. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Shelton, CT is in Fairfield County, which is in the New York market, doesn't that mean the major New York affiliates are must-carry on the cable lineup? That's what they told us at a local cable advisory meeting in the 90s. Therefore, by Comcast removing FOX5, doesn't that violate must-carry laws?

One last thing, the only stations available in this part of Connecticut via antenna years ago were 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9(WOR), 11, 13, 20, 43, and 49. Now some of their digital signals aren't even available over-the-air here. And then you have cable companies taking many of them off their lineups. Call me old-fashioned, but digital TV and cable seems like a step in the wrong direction. I know that things change over time, but this is change for the worse, not for the better.

Usually the case, but if the cable franchise serves towns in multiple counties and franchise head is in the county in the other DMA, the lineup can skew towards what the other DMA gets in must-carry. I see that WUVN and WRDM have must-carry here, and not WXTV and WNJU.

There is one town in NJ - Plumsted NJ 08533. Population: 7,275. Its in Ocean County which is NY market. So satellite customers will get NYC channels. That town was historically serviced by Garden State Cable which is based in Camden County. All Philly channels on cable. Even after Comcast acquired it and the systems around it, the franchise zones remained, so cable customers get a different market than satellite customers. I've seen separate lineups though in other situations.

While there is contention with what Comcast is doing to out of market stations, I think ppl should realize that the out of market stations are still available through Comcast, and if you have cable you're often better off getting digital, with a bundle it anyways. These stations often air duplicative programming and are taking space on analog far more than they need to just for a different market newscast. They are not available through Dish or DirecTV, and with Fios, Fios has been inconsistent in the area (some counties not getting any distant stations, etc.) as well.

Shelton is 58 miles from New York but only 39 miles from Hartford. Despite its being in Fairfield County, part of the New York market, doesn't it make more sense to get TV from the closer city, especially since Shelton and Hartford are in the same state? I would think Shelton would be better served by Hartford stations than New York stations, particularly with regards to local and state news.

Towns on the edge of counties often get odd cable lineups. When I lived in Barre MA we got all the Boston stations, since Worcester County is in the Boston market. But we only got two of the three Springfield stations, despite Springfield being closer than Boston, plus we got a Providence station, further away than Boston or Springfield. Go figure.
