Comcast Internet

I know this is a TV forum but since Comcast is discussed every now and again I was wondering if someone with knowledge could possibly post Comcast Houston internet speeds & prices.

All options are not listed on the Comcast corporate site, they only list 1.5, 12 and 24 and I do believe they have a 6 and more. I really don't feel like talking to someone on the phone and have to deal with their reps. right now.

I have AT&T UVerse internet currently but in the past year they really have seemed to lag and I have the 12 Mbps.

Any help would be appreciated thx.

For Houston:

Economy Internet - $39.95
Somewhere around 1.5 to 2mbps I believe
or,
Economy Internet with Comcast Cable Service or Comcast Digital Voice - $26.95
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Performance Internet - $59.95
12mbps
or,
Performance Internet with Comcast Cable Service or Comcast Digital Voice - $44.95
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blast! Internet - $69.95
16mbps... It may be 24mbps now.
or,
Blast! with Comcast Cable Service or Comcast Digital Voice - $57.95
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Extreme 50 - $116.95
50mbps
or,
Extreme 50 with Comcast Cable Service or Comcast Digital Voice $99.95
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Basic Cable Service & Blast! Internet - $61.95
-------------------------------------------

Comcast claims that PowerBoost will give you an extra 3-4mbps download speed. This really takes place on initial download for a few seconds, then settles out to normal for your tier.

You should be able to lock in a one year, special low price when first signing up. Offers vary every month to three months

Also note: The cable modem monthly lease fee is $7.00 a month.
You can use a Comcast approved modem on your own to save on the modem lease fee.

I'm thinking about it. I do know NOT to get the Motorola SB6120 model. Many have issued complaints with the recent firmware update for this model. The firmware update made this particular Motorola model useless with Comcast.

Thanks for replying.

I think I'll stick it out with AT&T, at least they don't charge for the modem. And gosh have prices went up or at least since the last time I had Time Warner Houston. I was expecting 12 to be around $50 but not $60. I'm paying $45 for 12 now with AT&T and their 18 Mbps is only $55.

I heard about their throttling back of Netflix and other seemingly 'shady' business practices but was willing to dive on in.

Comcast, color me unimpressed.

I have 5M download for $35 with AT&T DSL and have been really happy with that. It does everything I need, even Netflix. I'm not sure what I would gain with more speed.

Comcast is in the process of dropping most of its remaining analog channels in Houston (the "Xfinity upgrade") which will free up more bandwidth for faster internet connections (DOCSIS 3.0) along with more HD channels.

Remember Comcast has a 250 GB cap. AT&T (regular and U-Verse) has no cap. Also seems like AT&T is a bit cheaper especially if you don't want Cable TV.

I wonder if Earthlink Cable is still offered, they didn't have any surcharges for not having TV service, didn't charge for modem rental either. Comcast sounds like a racket :/

My apologies for bringing this back up, but how much did you all pay for installation?

The customer rep. just quoted me a $79.95 install price and that seems awfully expensive.

Thanks!

I paid nothing, as far as I know. Been a while, but I might have paid $25(at the most) to get hooked up, if I paid at all. The house was cable ready anyway. If you're even just a bit tech savvy, you could go the route of 'do-it-yourself' hookup. I thinks Comcast offers that option. All Comcast would have to do is 'turn on' your cable from the outside, if need be.

It may be that this new higher installation cost being quoted to you is part of that grand and wonderful, new Xfinity service. As for me, I dropped their cable TV service in January, just before their Xfinity implementation. Got tired of being hit with increased service charges one to two times every year. It was getting ridiculous. A little higher here, a little higher there, as though I wouldn't notice. Oh the power of free TV via the internet, and of course, over-the-air free TV these days.

My last post seemed more to be a rant against Comcast, but in fairness, the ever increasing prices for cable TV service is not entirely their fault. Much blame goes to the media conglomerates that always want more and more for their shows, whether it be new or rerun syndication. Viacom is a prime example. They are pricing themselves out of the market, IMO. Most of their new shows are crap anyway. Here I could go on about our phony economy(at least that's what I call it), but I'll leave that for my posts at the CNBC blogs.

Scratch AT&T DSL off that, they are putting a cap on in May.

"AT&T says it will implement a 150GB monthly cap on landline DSL customers and a 250GB cap on subscribers to U-Verse high speed internet starting on May 2nd."

Well, scratch future possible service with AT&T. Guess I'll stick with my Comcast Blast! one year reduced rate and then downgrade to Performance as intended.

Unfortunately it looks like Earthlink and other competitive cable ISPs are no longer available in Houston due to the switch to Comcast.

EDIT: Did more research. Earthlink Cable is still available to Comcast Houston, but it is subject to the 250 GB cap (WTF!). So much for an independent ISP.

If I recall correctly, one of the stipulations of the AOL Time Warner merger was that Time Warner Cable must allow competitive ISPs onto the cable network. MindSpring was the only national ISP to do this and they were quickly bought up by Earthlink. You could get a 6 Mbps connection for $42.95, with NO penalty for not subscribing to cable TV. You actually got a MindSpring IP address and everything, your data didn't really travel over the Time Warner network except to reach Earthlink. You still got a bill from Time Warner, but it had a single line item "EARTHLINK CABLE" with the charge, no taxes or fees.

Anyway - Earthlink [is still] available in other Time Warner markets that existed at the time of the merger, but Time Warner does not cap (yet). You could get a CLEC DSL (I think that's the term?) maybe, Covad or something to get around the caps.

Of course, with their purchase of 51% of NBC, Comcast is one of those media conglomerates now :p
