Comcast loses big time as Acworth cable system sold

Strike up one for the little guy.

On Thursday, the Acworth city council voted 4-1 to sell the city-owned cable system, Acworth CableNET, to Madison, GA based Klip Interactive. Klip operates 80 cable systems, including several here in Georgia. Klip will pay about $5 million for the system, $2,000 per customer on the system as of Thursday (approx 2,500 users).

Comcast offered the same deal. However, they would only pay for each customer on the system at the day of closing. That is where they screwed up.

-----------------------------

Comcast competes with Acworth CableNET in Acworth, so that is why they were interested. Also, everybody knows that all Comcast wanted the system for their fiber-optic cables and the subscriber base. Had Comcast won, they would have shut down the Acworth headend and merged operations with the Vinings headend. (Comcast's Cobb County headend is located on Cumberland Pkwy, a few blocks from Cumberland Mall, and a couple of blocks from the old Weather Channel studios. That is on the direct oppisite end of the county from where Acworth is located.)

At least the people here in Acworth will still have a choice for cable television. Take that Comcast!

Plus, cable rates would go up and the quality of service would go down, as Comcast would have a monopoly on cable in Acworth. By having a competitor, Concast would be forced to keep their rates low at a reasonable level and pay more attention to customer service.
