Comcast Sports Houston is having trouble finding service providers

While Uncle D created the mess that is CSN Houston, Crane seems to be determined to run it into the ground.

CSN Houston

Does anyone think that CSN Houston will cease operations soon?

Barron tweeted today that lawyers from all sides met in closed session to discuss a settlement. None was reached, but attorneys from the different parties are meeting elsewhere to talk settlement while the hearing continues. Follow @dfbarron for live updates from the hearing.

My gut tells me that CSN Houston might shutdown before the year is over. A channel that's not available to everyone, spells certain doom in my eyes. Everyone that has cable in the Philadelphia DMA gets CSN Philly and they been around for 16 years

I don't blame the Astros for killing the DirecTV deal if it would cause them to be locked in to a long-term deal that would lose money. The fact that Comcast recommended they accept the deal tells you all you need to know: the two sides have opposing business interests that prevent them from being good partners.

This will end with at least the Astros going back to FS Southwest and maybe both teams there.

The judge's order makes the Astros the lead in forming a business plan for the channel.

Crane says that he can run the business better than Comcast. The court is giving him until December 12th to see if he can cut better deals than Comcast did... or not. It could mean the games move to another broadcaster, it could mean that the network gets picked up by other carriers, or it could mean that basically nothing changes.

If Crane doesn't succeed, then we're basically back to appointing a trustee. It's put up or shut up time for the Astros.

I think the Astros would be foolish to stay in business with Comcast. They need to strike a deal with Fox, get out of the Comcast deal and get on about the business of running a baseball team.

In the long term, I don't see this working better than Comcast or any other cable/sat co owning the channel. I really wish it would be owned by a company that would not have an interest in exclusivity.

Good luck to all those losing their job. Bad time to be out of work in the broadcast industry here--lots of recent layoffs at local stations, with more to come.

It's amazing how many highly paid executives who should know what they are doing have made a complete mess out of CSN Houston.

DIRECTV, AT&T Offically Launch ROOT Sports Southwest, CSN Houston Is No More

DIRECTV Sports Networks and AT&T U-verse TV today debuted the ROOT Sports Southwest regional sports network, replacing the now-dormant CSN Houston. The launch immediately makes the channel’s Rockets games and upcoming Astros games available to four times as many households throughout the Houston area. The network went live at 6 a.m. CT today, and tonight at 7 p.m. CT, Houston Rockets fans can watch their team take on the Memphis Grizzlies.

Under the management of DIRECTV, ROOT Sports Southwest will be available in more than 4 million Houston area homes – up from fewer than 1 million during the past two Rockets and Astros seasons. The launch follows more than a year of haggling and Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings between former owner Comcast, the Rockets and the Astros, after the network failed to secure widespread carriage throughout the Houston market.

ROOT Sports Southwest is now available to AT&T U-verse subscribers on channels 758 in SD/1758 in HD and DIRECTV customers on channel 674. Local Comcast cable customers will see ROOT Sports Southwest in place of CSN Houston on channels 39 in SD/639 in HD. ROOT Sports Southwest will produce all Rockets games and future Astros coverage exclusively in HD.

It will be a stripped down replacement for CSN Houston, as two-thirds of the former CSNH staff were laid off. Rockets and Astros games, with pre- and postgame shows, but everything else is national content, including Dan Patrick and Rich Eisen.

Remains to be seen what, if anything, will be done with the former CSN+ overflow channel.
