I believe you're right, I know one or both worked at WKXY in the 70's.
The last time I heard Rick and Suds was in the summer of 2000 on WINZ. 940 out of Miami.
They were great along with the rest of the WSUN line up at the time. (early to mid 90's)
As far as WKXY goes, what a great live and local station; I'm amazed that the Fernandez family held on to it as long as they did and sorry they had to let it go.
Years ago, a very wise station owner told me that the business of radio was a fine balancing act between sales and programming. Too much of either and the business fails.
Okay, so the bean counters have been running radio. If it costs money, get rid of it. So that's why on FLA you no longer have Mark Beiro, or local news after 7 pm or anything compelling that makes you want to listen.
I totally agree with the "LOCAL, LOCAL, LOCAL". That is how radio will win again. You think that crap they're programming on HD-2 channels is interesting? It's about as bland as the junk they program on Cable TV music stations. And the standard FM channels continue to get worse.
During this "recession", I'm hearing more salespeople complain about the lack of sales. Perhaps radio should trim some of the non-producers in the sales staff and bring back some air talent/programmers. Invest in your properties!
If anyone can make radio interesting again, it's Randy Michaels. I just hope it isn't too late.
How fun that Randy, who became famous in part for investing in and resurrecting several monster AMs in his Jacor days, may now have to do the same for FM stations!
