Come On Along!

Today, after a 6 year, 5 month absence I'm back on the air. K-O-M-Y 1340 am, La Selva Beach, California. The Original Sound of Monterrey Bay. Just an hour ago it hit me...will they like me? Will I be relatable? Will they ... Will I ... You know what? I hope this doen't come out wrong; I Don't Give a Crap! There! I've said it. During my first go-around (by the way, is this a new career or more of the same old same old??? hee hee) ... (I say this is a brand new career and I'm a young stud ready to kick butt! - Wayne Coy once said, "In your chest beats the heart of an 18 year old." ... Bring it on!) Where was I? Oh yeah, can old guys still do it? (Radio) Stand back, baby! I'll never give up on the listeners. One called me and said, "Move over Wolfman Jack! John Mack is back!" (this was back in the 90's when I went through a layoff every 5 months!) One called and said, "You're bigger than any set of call-letters." Do you think I believed that? Heck no! I'm justa New Mexico nobody who happens to think people who turn on the radio are great. You know how some people like windsurfing or box car derbies? I like folks who turn on the radio! One of the great lines used on K-O-M-Y, is "Radio for those people who stilll know how to use a radio." What a great statement. AM, it doesn't get anymore basic than that. Stir in the Joe Jeffery Group, and away we go! Hope you'll be long? If not, I'll fill you in right here. -John-

Congradulations John, You are absoulutly, positively, with out a doubt right where you should be "Behind The Microphone"! Your not too old Face it if more DJs were from New Mexico, radio would be worth listening to! People in Santa Cruz are lucky, They have a "Radio Legend" on the air! Your time at KFRC, KYA, KCBS 97.3 pre rocker times were some of the best ive ever heard! Take a hour and listen to what we have here to listen to, One person, that comes to mind Sylvia Chacon, you two have "Something that is Different" Personality, real, not fake You two really made KYA what it was! KOMY really made a Grrrreat decision adding you John! Thats the problem today on Bay Area Radio Lacking talent big time! How many times has someone turned on the radio and thought "Oh no not this DJ again"? DJs like your self and Sylvia Chacon, Chris Edwards (the one who was Employed by Avco) are few and far between! Good luck John enjoy, Theres only one John Mack Flanagan! Thats my story and Im stickin to it! Kenny in Concord

Hoo hoo, My prayers have been answered. JMF back on the bay area airwaves!!!! I hope I can pick up the station here in Pacifica. Otherwise will on-line streaming be available??

Hello! Please forgive my early work at KOMY, even IF it makes the air. I am a total know-nothing when it comes to 21st century radio. Everything is a voice file and I know nothing about it! (Where's that darn tape cartridge???) Anyway, KOMY will be tracks but I have experience with that, doing the Concept Format for Dick and Mary Wagner from 1989-1994. Good old Burley, Idaho and "Rocky" in Stuebenville, Ohio and Steam Boat Springs, why shoot! I've been everywhere on voice tracks. KDUC (The Duck Of The Desert) in Barstow was classic! I think we can do the same thing. Our KOMY line-up? Dave Mars (local LEGEND) mornings, the wonderful Jay Arnold middays, The Dead Doctor (oooh) 12-1p.m. What's-His-Name afternoons and WOLFMAN JACK (!!!) evenings. Quite something for a peashooter. Anxious to see how we do next to the new 50,000 clear channel (not company...frequency) KTRB in San Francisco. I explained to the folks in Santa Cruz, KOMY feels like and independent film as opposed to KTRB, MGM blah, blah, blah. And, that part of the country, Monterrey Bay, is awesome! Thanks for your prayers and best wishes. I need em'. -John-

You know who says "oh no not that dj again"? Consultants, Inexperienced pd and gm's and jealous NO TALENTS. For some reason these jerks go out of there way to keep great vets off the radio. Too Old, Too This, Too That. Very sad indeed :'(

Rushed home to hear my first on-air work since October 2000, and heard myself on KOMY and went YYEECH! Believe me, I'm my own worst critic. Dr. Don always said I could be great if I wasn't my own worst enemy. My new work at KOMY sucks. Then I listened and said, "Hey! Who's trying to do anything? Anywhere? It's the glass half full thing. I choose to see the half full part not the half empty thing. KOMY was been staging elements and music, no personalities. O.K. so I'm canned, is that better than nothing? I think so. I have a history in this area thanks to KFRC, and KWSS, and I believe people will hang with me. It's all about THEM. Screw me! Who am I anyway??? To hell with what people think, I care about what I think. Am I soiling my reputation? Maybe, but I'm 60 for God's sake. How much damage can I do? My air chexx are on the web, so big deal. Am I mancow, or Glenn Beck? Ask me if I wanna be? The large answer is "No". I'll take KOMY the way it is. It can only get better right?!? ... And the music is killer! "New York's a Lonely Town (when you're the only surfer boy around) by the Tradewinds and "Superfly" Curtis Mayfield in the same hour. OooohWeee! -John-

My Mom always made me, "sleep on it"...things sure look different in the morning sunshine, instead of the midnight hour after a 12 hour day. Last night I was all shook up about my digital re-entry into the world of radio, but now it feels different. After all, I am doing the best I know how to do. Things will work out, I just know it (oh yeah...call me Pollyanna Flanagan!). Actually it's all about the listener. Hope their ears can take it!?! If you just logged in, I writing about KOMY 1340AM, La Selva Beach, California, we're launching a new digital presentation and I'm back into radio after a 6 year, 5 month absence. Log on at KOMYradio.com and give it a listen, and thanks for all your support, it means the world to me. -John-

Congrats John...............Were so Excited for you this is like so exciting for our John to be back on the Radio where he belongs, what a great situation, we all need to plan a "Welcome Back John Party" and celabrate John's Return to the bay area radio airwaves, finally some talent back on the air in the bay area, what a pleasure to have one of the tightest and most talented jocks in the bay area back on the radio, Once John settles in his tracking will be so tight you won't even realize its tracked, but John we want a few live stints every now and then...Good Luck glad to have you have back on the air....

Jay Arnold told a friend of mine that the plug has already been pulled on this idea by the station already. He said that Friday was his last shift. Wow a whole week.

Production boy,

That does seem hard to believe and hard to confirm since we can't hear the station in SF. Perhaps someone just made that up. The station owner Michael Z. does seem more comitted to the format.

On another subject, today someone told me that the executives from 900 Front Street were over at 1700 Montgomery this past week. If that is true will anything beome of it?

Hmm....interesting thoughts?

Sorry, it's not made up...it's true. KOMY may go satellite-fed with the oldies during
the week, possibly with local talent during the weekend. Otherwise, the automation
system presently running will stay in place...either way, it's more cost-effective for
KOMY.

I knew if KYAA am 1200 (playing oldies) couldn't make it I had a feeling KOMY am would be in the same boat (if this story is true) I really had hoped it would have made it with some good local talent but to give the station 1 week (air staff) was a mistake. Not having local personalities kills a station. Voice tracking is bad enough but it's better than "feeds" from the east coast or down Texas way, you can't judge a stations format/programing that quick. One wonders why more folks are getting I-Pods and sattellite radio, even satellite and HD radio has it's critics too I suppose but this is a good example why radio today is DOA (dead on arrival).

Yes, one week was definitely not enough time to go with what they wanted to do. The voice tracking was terrible, as if amateurs were putting everything together. There may be financial problems also, as I've only heard repeated spots for two separate sponsors.

djj, thank you for confirming it, I actually heard about it on Friday at work, from a reliable,
let us say, Radio Groupie, from the south bay who spends his every waking hour calling radio stations and getting info. The Jay Arnold thing came from a personal friend on Sat.
Sad, but doomed from the start.

Well last week training on our new Spot Delivery system (Enco) was taking place at 900 Front. And the trainer was being called about every hour by his company about KTRB's Enco system, Get This, They had just taken out of the box on Wed...to have up and running by Thursday, their Launch. The Trainer said it was a train wreck, and it sure sounded like it on the air. :-[ Perhaps they thought the Enco Guy was an ABC Guy.

I really don't think Macy's tells Gimble...but the rumor I keep hearing is Disney may want to buy 860 for ESPN after the ABC sale closes. Let's see how commited to Local Broadcasting Pappas is when Disney backs up the Brinks Truck. Time and money will tell.
Well mostly money. ;)
