COME UP WITH A FORMAT

Let's say you had the money and opportunity to come up with a format that might work in Providence. Doesn't matter what frequency. You have more money than you know what to do with and no corporate suits to answer to. What do you do? If, and only if, I could determine looking at the numbers that Cat Country and Lite were sharing listeners, I would go with a country/ac hybrid that would target females. That doesn't mean obvious country crossover songs and artists. It means combining the formats and being selective about the music. A lot of non kicka$$ country that doesn't cross over is just ac music sung by artists with a twang anyway. If I could determine that enough listeners are switching back and forth from country to ac, I'd play them both as an actual cross-country format and try to keep them on my station all the time.

I think a more heavily leaning Classic Rock station (like WRX used to be) would cut into both HJY and B101 if the right songs (which RX used to play but neither B or HJY are playing now) and I think it would get decent enough ratings(it would probably grab from Lite, too thinking about it....)

On the FM Side: I'd do a CHR-R. Open up the playlist on the weekends. With 80's & 90's mixed in.

On The AM Side: Local morning show. Then Scott Shannon's Oldies off the bird.

I actually liked the Scott Shannon Oldies channel. Now, If I had an FM frequency I would do an old 99.3 WBLQ format. Rock oriented but would let the jocks slide off if done correctly without a train wreck.
Great place to work. I loved it there. No playlist. No liner cards. Wide open for the jock. The pay wasn't that great but we had a ball doing it.
The last year we were on the air they actually made a profit.

I really think Rick Edwards could keep that station going if he was still programming it.

Country/AC sounds good in theory especially with so many country acts getting TV exposure. People not prone to listen to the format are hearing the music. I don't know about its success in practice. You'd need a strong morning show to start the day.

Classic rock could take a bite out of B101 which despite numbers has no audience loyalty after the morning show, but I think HJY's listeners are attracted to the station because it's just part of their lives. They could probably flip to classic rock tomorrow and not lose listeners. Classic rock is also heading towards the same radio fate as oldies did with older demos.

If by CHR-R you mean Rhythmic CHR, I don't know about that. Maybe a Fun107 type CHR that's much more palatable than Hot.

I would actually like to see a "we play everything" type format like Mike in Boston. Low overhead and for a station like 93.3 it couldn't hurt.

'HJY has largely trended Classic Rock over the past couple of years. They no longer mix Classic Rock with Alternative currents. While some Alternative songs are played, they are mostly 90s and early 2000s Gold. There is actually significant overlap in the 'HJY and B101 playlists. It is clear, however, that Clear Channel cares most about 'HJY's success - as well they should.
