Comedian Mort Sahl Dead At 94

Mort Sahl 1976 WBAI - Interviewed by Bill Kortum. Includes Mort reading from his newly published autobiography "Heartland" and the news of the day, including the 1976 Election.... Just uploaded. I have a few other archives that I haven't uploaded, but will soon.

It IS the same thing. Just a bit more sudden (and obvious, and even tragic!) in Meador's case.
I don't know how old you are but in 1963, there hadn't been a Presidential assassination in 62 years and the entire country and free world were shocked that such a thing could still happen in America! Everything stopped for four days, with everyone glued to their televisions! It brought the nation together like nothing since and probably before, since we didn't have radio or TV in 1901! To compare that to a celebrity falling out of favor is just unbelievable! If Vaughn Meader had continued to imitate Kennedy, he would have zero support and in the unlikely event that he could get someone to book him, that person's career would be effectively over and that's the best case scenario!

Everyone still alive remembers what they were doing when they heard the initial report of the shooting: I was in an assembly. We were watching a film of John Glenn's spaceflight that included the speech that JFK made about sending a man to the moon before the end of the decade.

Okay, boomer! (Never thought that I would be able to say that!)

Gotta agree.

Nobody’s shtick built on a presidential impression survives after the president leaves office, whether by retirement, an election loss or death. The only exception to that (so far) is the former guy. There really wasn’t a Trump equivalent of a Vaughn Meader or a David Frye for Trump, but most comics do a Trump impression, and since he has not, like other former presidents, dialed down his profile, he provides fresh material.

Frank Caliendo is probably the best known Trump impersonator, but his heyday was before Trump was elected.

I didn't find out until I got home from school that afternoon. They didn't tell us. I wondered why my mother was so upset, and she said to turn on the TV.

I don't remember if they did or not. I was in 3rd grade, and I don't remember the teacher telling us what happened.
We were brought in from recess a few minutes early. The teacher told us what had happened and we were sent home. In L.A., that was a little after 11:00 a.m.

Most comics today have a whole stable-full of people that they impersonate. As I mentioned earlier, Dana Carvey had a whole slew of his usual targets leaving the public eye all at about the same time.

David Frye kept his LBJ impression going for his first three Nixon albums, as a "supporting voice." But since Johnson died in 1973, Frye stopped doing him afterwards. He also tried and failed to develop a Jerry Ford impression -- someone Rich Little did well -- so he was pretty much washed up after 8/9/1974.
