Comedian Norm MacDonald, passes at 61

I remember his time on SNL doing Weekend Update, but also from the Comedy Central roasts and a few other appearances. He was a funny comedian, a great storyteller and kind of had a dry, dead-pan delivery at times, but with an impish grin or smirk the entire time he was delivering a bit.

He's up in heaven with Belushi, Farley and Radner now. RIP Norm!

Also, RIP Norm, he was one of the few comedians i enjoyed watching when i grew up by seeing him host Weekend Update on SNL. also, he's the second former Weekend Update anchor to die, the first was Charles Rocket, who died at 56 from a slit throat (which ruled a suicide).

Thanks for the catch on the double post @Will_H_69_9 When I posted this story I checked the "in memoriam" section to see if this particular obit had already been added, but somehow missed seeing it.

I noticed in the listings on TiVo that SNL has its first prime time episode on September 25. Hopefully they'll do something special for him. When someone who has appeared on the show has just died, those prime time episodes usually feature the person.

Oops. That should have been October 2.

Anyway, I thought of something else I believe he did. Carls Jr. had a star as its logo when its owner took over Hardee's ( a competitor to McDonald's and Burger King, mostly in the South). The plan was for Hardee's to keep its breakfast items but add Carls Jr.'s food at other times of the day. I think Norm was the voice of the star in the first commercials for the "new" Hardee's, and he made some nasty comments which I guess were acceptable only because the star always smiled, regardless of how angry he was.

They did have him on Weekend Update, and the classic episode this week had an entire Weekend Update done by him (outrageous!), plus a sketch where Brendan Fraser asked to see the cast, regardless of what they were doing, and Norm was dressed as Robin Hood or someone like him. I don't even remember what he said but he was funny.
