Is it just me, or did I just see 102.7 in the top 15 in the December PPM's, just behind KLBJ-AM (listed as KGSR-FM HD 3)?

Not bad for a translator and HD-3 program source. Correct me if wrong, but isn't this the first time an HD subchannel has registered in the top 15 in...dare I say...ANY market? I realize that its not HD-3 listening that is driving the results, its tune-in to the low power 102.7. Sure is interesting how so many have dismissed this station and HD programming in general, yet it showed up with better numbers than other, long-established stations.

Congrats to Emmis for proving that HD programming can have an impact in a market. Anybody else see HD subchannels having any impact anyplace else?
 
First off, LOL on your screen name.

Comedy 102.7 is having a very impressive run. It's crazy how large that cume is for a translator, even beating NewsRadio KLBJ.

It will be interesting to see how this format fares in 6 months. Does it have lasting appeal or is it a fad.

Also, I think Funny 102.5 in Kansas City might have cracked the top 15 a few months ago.
 
Maybe they should kill KGSR and put Comedy on 93.3 and move KGSR over to HD-3 and 102.7.
 
What is interesting about 102.7 is my niece and her husband came into Austin for the holidays from Colorado and they happened to come across it and the whole time they were here, that was what was on their car dial. I also tune in every now and again when I am not in the mood for music but I hate talk radio. Comedy is a good fit for people like me.
 
Austin probably has one of the most favorable situations for FM translators. Despite the low powers involved, the transmitter locations in the western hills give excellent line-of-sight coverage of the market.
 
Seriously... KGSR's days have gotta be numbered. They've tweaked that thing as much as they can without blowing it up and flipping. Have heard Maroon 5 on there a couple times in recent days. What???

If they do, they would probally just flip KGSR as a simulcast. Keeping Comedy on 102.7 helps EMMIS market there other stations like 101x, and 103.5. Second it brings listeners over from Clear Channel's 102.3 the Beat (Doesn't Comedy 102.7 have Sinbad on their programming?) The advantages of putting Comedy on 93.3 along with 102.7 is better coverage in Northwest Austin and the burbs.

If 102.7 becomes KGSRs AAA format and 93.3 goes to Comedy I think it would hurt Emmis' other stations in the ratings.

KGSR was tried on 102.7 and failed.

What they might do is switch KLBJ 99.7 over to 93.3 and move KGSR over to 99.7 to do that it would be something like AM 590 KLBJ, FM 93.3 KGSR, and for 99.7 they would call it KGSR HD-(whatever subchannel they would fall under)

Well, HD Programming in general is not like what they are doing on 102.7. Most of the HD channels have been programmed out of a box. Local Emmis is paying attention to it because of the simulcast and the fact that anybody can actually hear it. If this was only on HD, there would be no promotion and no locality about it. Aside from the folk posting on this message board, I'm willing to bet the penetration of HD radio receivers in this market is statistically zero.
 
I'm really not surprised that this station is doing well. I find myself drawn to the comedy channels on satellite radio quite often and I tend to listen for extended periods. This is just the rest of the public getting that chance. Though I have tuned in a couple of times to check it out, I will stick with the satellite version because I can't stand to listen to censored material. Drives me nuts....
 
Well, there is only do much recorded comedy out there...at least stuff that had been released. The satellite stations have the same issue and they addressed it by recording some shows themselves, doing some interview programs and I think they got some privately recorded material from the comedians themselves. Even with all that, there is still repetition. Think about it though, how many times is a song repeated on a Top 50 station in a week?
 
There's a huge difference between music and spoken word. You can listen to a song over and over and enjoy it. But if someone is telling you the same joke over and over, it goes from funny to amusing to so-so to lame to stupid to irritating pretty fast. Bill Cosby's routine about his wife giving birth comes to mind. It's a long story and once you realize it's playing again you have to decide whether you're going to wait for it to end or see what else is on. I usually see what else is on.
 
Part of what 24/7 Comedy wants to do is keep the bits short. I remember they were saying they didn't want to air long, drawn-out, routines, and I'm sure part of the reason is because Fred's not the only one who changes channels when hearing the same bit over again. I don't know how successful they've been at it, but they said they were wanting short routines.

Your point is well taken, Fred, but there are some comedians who have the kind of following that bring people wanting to hear certain routines over again. Yes, its a rare thing, but it happens. I think if they were really going to make a go at this, they need to make a deal with the local comedy clubs (both of them) and record shows each week so they can keep the content fresh. Not being able to include profanity is going to be a big roadblock for them because it significantly reduces the amount of content available to them. They might have to include some classic comedy bits ala Abbott and Costello and the like.
