Coming to Phoenix!

I'm way overdue putting Lamptimer 1440, Sports Parking Lot 6~Twenty, and all the valley's other fine broadcast facilities in the Tower Site Calendar and Tower Site of the Week...in fact, it's been eight years since I was last in the area.

So I'm planning to make a swing through Phoenix on April 14-16 on the way to the NAB show, with a side trip down to Tucson after that.

Any of the denizens of the Phoenix board up for some sort of lunch or dinner while I'm in town - maybe the night of the 15th? (I'm thinking of taking in a D-backs game the night of the 14th, and of course a group outing to the ballpark would be fun, too.)

Anyone have contacts in the Phoenix engineering world to get some site tours set up?

Any open class slots at Nurse Jeff's Hut o' Broadcasting Instruction?

This post just screams for something at Bill Johnson's big apple, Akbar has some kind of apple pie fetish.....

Note to Ak-u-bar:

Bill Johnson's apple pie is camel dung compared to Marie Callender's.

Besides, neither you nor your Gremlin are allowed to smoke on the premises. ;D

P.S. Isn't a 'fetish' something he wears on his head?

I thought an Ak-u-bar was something Ed Phillips used when forecasting the first 100 degree day in Phoenix?!?!?

Naw. That was his evaporative cooler chart thingy.

High Health has Ak-u-bars on sale 2 for a dollar.

..."high" in this case is spelled "h-i." (Scott should get that reference
even if no one else does.)

For the rest of you, while I can't remember their 800 number--I think
it's 686-something--I do know it's not 1-800-282-BOSE. ;)

Now to shift at least somewhat back on topic...

Shouldn't an evening of April 15 bash be held outside the USPS GMF at
4949 East Van Buren? After all, the local drive-by media will be there
doing their usual (and as required by the "Jive At Five Local News
Handbook") late tax filers stories. Of course, the TV cameras may be
a good reason why we wouldn't want to be there.

So for wherever the get-together is, the highlight of the evening will
probably be to figure out which one is Akbar. ;D

Don't forget that I spent one of the longest 18-month periods of my life as a TV assignment editor (it only felt like three years), and a few years after that as a TV reporter. So, yeah, I've done my share of Tax Day live shots. Ugh.

Thanks to everyone who's PM'd me or e-mailed me with contacts while this thread's been heading rapidly off the rails.

I'm thinking our gathering should actually be at sunset, at the K~Funn 1510 transmitter site... :D

Hey Big Apple would work out great, especially the one on Van Buren. They keep what has to be one of the first remote broadcasting trailers in that shed out back, which you can see from the street.

My thanks to everyone who's checked in either via PM or e-mail to say hello and offer tours!

Being a western New Yorker, I have to check out the Tempe outlet of Ted's Hot Dogs, the famed Buffalo-based hot dog institution.

So...lunch at the Ted's in Tempe, 1755 E. Broadway, at the SW corner of Broadway and McClinton?

Let's say 12:30 next Wednesday, April 15...who might be in?

The Nurse and I'll try to make it, as long as we can get someone knowledgable to cover the scheduled course that day at the Buckeye Media Hut. Hmmmm.....wonder if the Luvable One knows anything about "Rimshotting For Fun & No Profit"? After downing a couple of dogs and tasty morsels from the deep fat fryer, how 'bout hittin' the KMIK Wall Of Towers site first? Then we'll swing by the Mesa Cemetery for a quick peek at KXAM; followed by a dip in the canal just south of Thomas to see Lumberyard 14~Forty and cap off the day with a twofer at the diplexed KKNT/KFuNN. This'll be more exciting than wondering which Valley station will start playing Xmas music before Halloween this year!

Now everyone else will be showing up a bit late--so we can loiter around
outside waiting for the '76 Gremlin to arrive. ;D

Does this mean our luncheon will be spoiled graced by the presence of
55/FYI's lunatic Jacobs, seeing as how he is a live read spokesguy for
Ted's on air? Hint to Scott: we'd much rather have the Nearly Bald One
attend--and even better if he brings his better half (while I meant Kim,
Michelle would be fine too). ;)

A tour of KKNT/KFuNN's site has been offered...so let me see if they don't mind turning it into a group activity, and maybe we can all traipse up there.

Shouldn't we be hitting the Lumberyard right at sunset? ;D

Just bumping this up top with a reminder that the lunch at Ted's Hot Dogs is TOMORROW, Wednesday the 15th, at 12:30.

Hope to see as many of you as possible there...cognito or in- ! ;)

I must apologize for my very very very brief appearance.

I had 3 meetings today, 2 were unscheduled, all were too long. I had just enough time to leave the office, park walk in, and leave.

grrrrrr!

Wish I could have joined ya... would have been great.. love me some teds since I am a Buffalo guy originally

It was a good time, even if I did overeat... :p

But KLL and oldiesfan and I are all wondering - did we somehow miss the promised arrival of the Gremlin? No fezzes were seen in the environs - too much going on at the Media Hut this afternoon?

Let's see Akbar come up with a better excuse than this...

"The Nurse and I arrived at 12:30, waited 20 minutes, but no one else showed up
by 12:50 so we left. It was only when we got back to Buckeye that we discovered
the Media Hut's master clock had been on daylight-saving time since March 8 which
made us an hour early. We immediately ordered a newer model clock that has the
'DST off' option."

...hopefully the Doc never applies for the Official U.S. Timekeeper position at the
NIST in Boulder. ;D
