Comments about 98.7 The Fan

I think the station sounds great. the line up is solid thru the whole day, love the sports updates every 20 minutes, love the imaging, teasers, so far so good. Have there been some speed bumps, yes. but that should be expected with any new business. hats off to CBS - they've given sports fans something to be proud of on the FM dial.

It is nice to hear local late night sports talk and better yet locally delivered late night sports updates. The only change that eventually would be coming is "Rollergirl" changing her moniker. Her pipes and delivery come across so much better on FM, that she'll probably soon outgrow the "girl" nickname.

We counter that with FSR's Rob Dibble and whats her name. Quickly becoming "meh"...and the Fox Sports News Update gooooooooooooooes....nowhere. :60 seconds of hit and run scores, cheesily delivered with the now oh so dated "24" clock ticking in the background.

The only problem I have with the updates overnight is that ALL scores for any baseball, football, basketball and hockey games must be given on all updates. You can't have a update with some scores and hope at the next update that they will give you the scores you didn't get in the previous update. It doesn't take long to give the score and the highlights from a Rays,Bucs,Lighting or USF game and then go to the complete scoreboard. Overnight listeners need to hear all the scores on all updates. That's one of things that will make this station the must listen station for sports fans in Tampa Bay.

What I like about are the hosts "The Fabulous Sports Babe", Gary Shelton and Todd Wright. These three make this station interesting because they know the Tampa Bay sports scene. Having these three on 98.7 The Fan, keeps me from listening to "The Sports Animal". I like Rich Herrara too, especially if a Rays game is on at the same time and he can give an immediate commentary. I would say that 98.7 is off to a great start and I am sure they will continue to offer more to sports fan in Tampa Bay.

Bad radio 101. Stick to local scores and games of major interest. Royals beat the Mariners? No one cares.

Royals beat Mariners, probably not, but a no hitter, career Home Run, a move in the standings, can be significant on which to report, especially with the added wild card. Obviously not with those two teams this year. On the other hand, if it just happened, it will support your claim of live and up-to-date. As a baseball fan, I know I like to hear that. As a cab driver, I have people all the time from different areas in the Country. Yes, from K.C. and Seattle, too.

Agreed. But the original post wanted every score, every break. Instant tune-out.

Overkill? or laziness?
I heard, yesterday, where the Rays lost in the Perfect Game 2-1.

Hey Parttimer, I want to know what the Tampa Bay teams have done that night. A complete out of town score update doesn't have to have great detail other than the score. What Jeff in Sa-ra-so-ta said is true about, it is overkill or laziness when the score for a Rays game is given incorrectly.

I see that WQYK-AM is now WHFS-AM.
The ID reflects that and so does the HD graphic on 99.5-3 and 1010.

Is it just me or do you think CBS should re-arrange the HD-2 and 3's. I know... all of about 7 people care about this but it would seem logical to keep all 3 sports stations on the same signal.

98.7 HD2 - 1010 AM
98.7 HD3 - WFAN New York
Move Smooth Jazz to either 94.1 HD2, 99.5 HD2or3, or 104.7 HD2or3. It would give Smooth Jazz a bigger and better signal anyway. Seems logical to me.

[/quote] I disagree, in a melting pot Market there are people from all over who do care! Especially from the Mid West and North East. So only do the Royals and Mariners if KC wins!.

You know, of all the frequency and format shifts that have been suggested on these boards, yours is the one I would love to see.

I especially like the idea of Smooth Jazz on 94.1-2 or -3.

Since it sounds like a good idea to me, it'll never work or be tried.

The only way someone says they love everything that station is doing is if they work there. And even if you work there, it's a strech to say you love that weekend ****** that's on for 15 hours at a time sudsy or whatever he calls himself. And I've yet to meet a single human being that likes that turd Horatio Sanz.

Ever think there might be Kansas City or Seattle transplants inhabiting the Bay area?

My question is this: how can CBS afford to pay all of the on-air talent and producers on this station who are ALL live and local? Makes no sense after seeing so many stations cut local talent and replace them with syndicated shows to save money. I love the concept but don't quite get how they are pulling it off in today's era of radio.

This is all speculation so...

First off, we don't know what the payroll is or the budget.

Second, they know they missed it in the New York Market. If they can "move" their talent to Tampa - or just out of The City - effectively, there will be a sort of pay raise in and of itself for the talent. Tampa can be the De-Facto center of the CBS Sports World, after all, who heard of Bristol before the ESP Network? And now I don't even have to say "Connecticut" for you to know that is where Bristol is.
