Safe for the Whole Family

The "safe for the whole family" has been used on mainstream AC stations as well, although not to the extent that Salem's Christian ACs have. At one point, 105.9 The River (Salem) and Lite 106.9 (Cox) here in Louisville were practically the same station in terms of positioning-The River kept trying to move on to Lite's position.

Now if someone trademarked the phrase "the one station at work everyone can agree on" . . .<P ID="signature">______________

"Safe For The Whole Family" was used by 104.9 The River in Columbus Ohio, Prior to their 104.9 The River "Positive Hits" Days.

Is it stupid that companies get up tight over a generic slogan, probally not if they have the Trademark/copyright on it. That's just the nature of business, Christian or not.

Radio Disney also uses the phrase "safe for the whole family" and they're certainly not a network seeking to glorify Jesus.

Thanks for the "actual response."

When bringing it up, I had a feeling that I wouldn't get a single on-topic response. My estimate was close.

There's an elephant in the room, and I was just wondering if anyone would acknowledge it and discuss the topic that overarches it. It's clear that's not going to happen. As others (and I) have said, trying to discuss radio on this board is awfully frustrating....but, every now and then, we'll get a little amnesia and try it again.

I agree about staying on topic, and generating hearty discussion...very difficult to do in this large a room...

Kind of like being at a noisy bar sometimes... when all you're really after is a friendly pub.

You should try it...it's good, clean fun.

Amongst industry folk, try to conduct an entire conversation using nothing but phrases heard on the radio -- positioners, liners, crutches, and commercial cliches. If you discover you're good at it, try for an hour...if you succeed at that, go for an entire day!


As far as "safe for the whole family" goes, I did toss that out in casual conversation once. A volunteer team I serve on was in a soundproof area during a service in which the pastor made a reference to radio. Not necessarily remembering I wasn't around radio people, I threw out, "you know, what we need is a station that's safe and fun for the whole family," as kind of a joke. All the married-with-kids guys immediately chimed in in agreement as if I'd said something new and revolutionary!

I know, but it's obvious they don't know the format or the audience. Not a one of them has gotten close to understanding or even accurately describing what just happened.

Yes, and it's become obvious that the format is such a relatively small world that no one is ever going to say anything that could be perceived as a negative for fear of offending a friend or acquaintance or messing with the political realities that exist (hence the "elephant in the room" thing).

That's understandable -- and even kind (I might need a little of that kind of kindness, myself, some day) -- but it makes a forum like this of little value. But that's okay, I guess.

WJIE/Louisville and WBHY/Mobile (both coincidentally, on 88.5) occasionally use that in place of "Today's Christian Music". Oddly, I've heard WBHY use "Today's Best Music", which no one else in the Mobile market is using, although that has been rare.<P ID="signature">______________

What is there to describe? A corporate cluster flipped a struggling rock station's format to something they thought might be more profitable. Of course...there are further nuances involved. But I'm not sure that I'm following you here.
