Comments, questions on Freak 107, WEXC Greenville

I got to hear the new WEXC this past weekend. I enjoyed some of the songs played, though I wasn't overly thrilled with the amount of hip-hop, as it isn't my favorite.

I did want to confirm that they are strongly positioning as a Youngstown station. I think this may be a little odd, but I was able to listen to 107.1 almost out to the I-76/I-80 interchange between Akron and Youngstown. Does WEXC have a viable signal in Youngstown proper? If so, will WEXC be a viable player in the Youngstown market?

Also, I didn't take time to listen to the co-owned AMs in Warren (1570) or Niles (1540). Co-owned WLOA 1470 has been reported as maintaining the WEXC oldies format. But what are 1540 and 1570 doing?

They aren't going to make so much as a dent unless they have some money to use on advertising. No one in the Youngstown/Warren area knows they exist.

Since I posted about "Freq 107" on my blog, I've had more of a chance to hit different parts of the Youngstown/Warren market. The 107.1 signal is better than I remember. I was actually in New Castle, PA today and the signal was strong in my car.

All of the Beacon-owned or operated stations seem to have a better signal recently. It could be due to new processing equipment that new Beacon owner Harold Glunt is reported to have purchased.

Still, as someone else noted below, the market basically doesn't know 107.1 exists. Mr. Glunt and company are going to have to spend some marketing money to spread the word about it. As far as I know, 107.1/Greenville has never positioned as a Youngstown station until now.

And 1470 still has the old WEXC oldies format, including "Wexy 107" liners and legal IDs which include WEXC, now off "Freqing" away from it. That update is as of this afternoon.

1570 is still mixing in locally-run oldies (a more eclectic mix than 1470, including soft AC-ish tunes) and the ABC satellite soft AC format "Memories, Unforgettable Favorites". According to our OMW source, it's supposed to eventually simulcast "Wexy" with 1470 and 1540.

1540 is still running urban AC under its previous configuration. No Glunt changes yet. (BTW, 1540 is the absolute WORST sounding station on the dial. It's muffled and hard to understand, even when down the road from its tower!)
