Commercial Free Hours

Many of the music stations in the New York area broadcast commercial free at certain times each weekday. Most of these time slots appear to to be at around the times when most people begin their workday. But there are also some in the afternoon.
Even frequent ratings leader WLTW goes commercial free for around two hours each morning.
Is this primarily a tool to gain an edge over competing stations? I wonder whether it is worth the loss of revenue.
It may be interesting to know when the various music stations offer continuous music without ads.
