Commercials in online episodes

I accept that I have to watch commercials as part of the privilege of seeing TV episodes online, which I rarely do because I have to be at one specific library (no sound, slow Internet at home; other libraries want you to use your own headphones).

But I watched a special about Clio-award winning commercials. I endured an unpleasant commercial for some feminine product and then it began. Amazingly, that was the last commercial I saw. Not counting the content of the program I was watching, which was hilarious. People say if commercials were really good, as these were, Hopper wouldn't be needed.

I wonder if they figured people were watching commercials anyway?

Sitting through a commercial before watching a program about commercials... what are the odds? :D

Or sitting through a commercial before watching a program about commercials, which featured that same commercial that you've seen before the start of the program.

Not this one! The show had GOOD commercials.

I had to watch a lot of commercials in order to see the finale of "Saving Hope". Some of them were particularly unpleasant, but I noticed that in some cases I could choose to see another commercial. The worst one got replaced with one that was much better.

I've noticed that online commercials are a hit-and-miss proposition. That is, sometimes they are there and sometimes not. I suspect it is just a matter of someone selling the time. Unlike OTA, online does not fill the unsold time with PSA's or blurps about how great their newscasts are. And then there are some online shows that never have commercials.

It gets really bad when you see that one exact ad over and over with no choice of switching to another. It makes me want to boycott that product just out of spite. At least on Youtube, they give you a skip option most of the time.

They do ask you for feedback. Certainly commercials that aren't relevant to you don't serve a purpose, and they'd like to be relevant. You don't get that advantage with TV, and this is an advantage of online advertising.

I do question TV stations airing tampon ads in action movies with explosions and such.

Sometimes I just enjoy a commercial for a product I wouldn't likely buy.
